    ThanX for the contest!

This is one of my favorites. When I think about having this family coin being handed down from before the Civil War through all that has happened in the world since and to have it still around.........WoW.

Oh, and it is GOLD! And in good shape. Old And pretty.

    And Gold!!!!

    Nice contest :)

My first favorite would be this beauty:

I think that the design on this coin is just plain magnificent. Especially when these have luster and are in great shape, they look astonishing. With very few minted of this date and mint, I would have to say this is one of my favorites. Not only I got this one dirt cheap a few years back, but it was my first commemorative (and now my only one!)

But looks aren't anything. With number two on my list, I present to you the Elephant Token:

No it isn't that pretty and not in the best shape (although that clip is premint, not post mint damage), it's mintage is incredibly low and there aren't many of these to go around. I am thankful I have not only one, but two of these beauties (the other a really good friend gave to me). This is one of the best one's I have seen, therefor making it to number two on my list.

But mintage, beauty and design aren't everything. Sometimes it's just the history or feeling there is behind that certain certain coin, which brings me to number 3 on the list.

Washington pieces just fascinate me so much. All the history and uses they had behind them must be incredible. This one is a good one because it has a really nice surface, which is quite hard to find on these, especially since it's a two hundred year old piece of copper!

    Thanks for the contest!

    my three favorites

The 1794 1/2 was my 1st flowing hair I purchased it after graduation form the police academy.

The 1783 Chalmers is a coin that fascinated me as a young lad and I always wanted to have one in my collection.

and the spiny oak tree shilling was my last acquisition.

Sorry about the bad scan of the 1/2 dollar done on my scanner I think I'll be investing in a better one. Thanks for the contest!!

I guess this only counts as one vote because it is the same story. Was inherited from my Dad a few months ago. It is the reason I began collecting.

This is one of my favs and the story behind it is:

This coin was given to me by an uncle that had it and was afraid that he would sell when he was short of cash for a lot less than it was worth. Since he didn't want to do that and knew as a kid I had collected coins he gave it to me. The reason he gave it to me is he knew I would be appreciative of receiving it and would value it greatly. He gave it to me in the 80's and it is my most prized coin. There are two reasons:

    1. My uncle gave it to me for free when he could use the money that it would bring.

    2. He trusted that I would value the coin and I have.

My uncle has passed and I will never forget his act of kindness he had done for me. During the early 80's jobs were few and far between in Houston, and my uncle gave his most valuable item he had at that time without consideration for the money he could use to pay a bill or two.

The coin has a scratch behind liberty's head but it is perfect as far as I'm concerned.

    1st coin:

    1908-sg.jpg

i like this one because i got it when i was 14 (or 13, don't really remember). i found it in a dealer's junk bin for 75¢. the reverse was covered in dirt. when i got it home, i cleaned off the dirt on the reverse and revealed the "s" mintmark. at the time, it listed in redbook for like $32 and i thought i hit the jackpot. still have the coin in my collection.

    2nd coin:

    bristol 3.jpg

it was minted between 1280-1281 a.d. i just love it for it's age. no, it's not my oldest coin.

    3rd coin:

    london 9.jpg

it was minted between 1299-1301 a.d. there's just something about the gash on the bust that attracted me to this coin. not really sure what it is. my imagination runs wild with this coin as to where it has been.

    thanks for the contest!!

My second fav is the 1877 Trade Dollar. Technically it does not belong to me. It is the closest thing my family has as an heirloom which goes to the first granddaughter on my moms side of the family. My sister was supposed to get it but my mom knew it wouldn't make it to the next generation if in my sisters possession. So basically I will hold it for that person to be old enough to understand its family relevance and to appreciate it. I need to ask my mom again how it's supposed to be passed down but I think it should go to my niece's daughter (sister's granddaughter) that will be born in the next month or so.

With my stories it would seem that my family is desperate for money. Lol

We didn't grow up with a lot but what we do have I guess I have to make sure it stays in the family. Maybe by the time I kick the bucket I can leave something like Rosethe's dad! Got a long way to go with only 1 gold in my collection!

My final entry! By the way the trade dollar and flying eagle aren't pics of my actual coins.

This last story is why I have a coin collection! My mom's twin sister when I was about 5 yrs old peeked my interest in coins. She did this by asking me if I wanted to see something. Well that something turned out to be a small collection of old coins. In that collection I remember a few of the coins. I remember a coin from the 1700's, V nickels, mercury dimes, buffalo nickels, and the one that stood out the most to me was a flying eagle. She told me those coins were for me. I thought it was strange for her to say they were mine since she had 4 boys and 2 girls exactly like her twin my mom who had 4 boys and 2 girls also.

Well I soon found out why they were offered to me because my cousins went into my aunts jewelry box got all those coins and went to the store and bought candy with them. Well needless to say the coins weren't in the register anymore when my aunt tried to retrieve them.

I never got those coins but my aunt is the reason I love coins because there was a nice set of coins that she had (20+) in that small collection. My 6 cousins got the switch they had to pick from the tree. Plus a lot of candy since it was a penny for a piece in 1970.

When I think about that collection the one I can still picture is the flying eagle, and I see my 5 yr old self standing there looking at it with my mouth open.

Hope y'all enjoyed my stories because I enjoy the things I have read on here.

My 1st Entry and my 1st Foreign Coin!

    Italy 20 Centesimi 1910

I found a bin in an antique store with foreign coins for a few cents each, so I purchased a handful and brought them home to look up. I had a good eye and picked coins that were worth a few bucks each, and this one caught my attention so much with its Magnificent design that I was hooked. I have been buying foreign coins that catch my eye ever since. I would say that this coin more than any other ever is what made me wish to be a numismatist and study foreign coins.

    My 2cd Entry

    Italy 1 Lira 1909

This is my favorite coin in my entire collection. After I was collecting coins for a few months I purchased some World Coin Guides and the first coin that I ever stopped and said " Boy I wish I could own one of these ", and a couple weeks later I was going through some metal boxes full of 2x2 flips in a little antique store and I came across this one for only $12, I was beyond excited and I have loved this coin ever since. I do have a 1908 as well that I picked up pretty cheap in an auction but this 1909 is my favorite coin that I own.

    My 3rd Entry

    Switzerland 20 Francs 1949

This is the first gold coin I ever found and I swear the cheapest a gold coin has ever been purchased for in the history of mankind!!! I was in a shop going through a 10 cents each or 11 for a buck Foreign coin bin and I came across this coin buried near the bottom in a plastic 2x2 flip. I purchased 11 coins total, so the actual cost of this gold coin was only 9 cents!!!!
