Ok, I didn't see a thread concerning this. I'd like to see everyone discuss instances in their life that reveals how bad they have the coin collecting bug. This came to my mind last night when I made a trip to Wheeling, WV to gamble a bit and watch a few dancing ladies. I knew I had it bad when I finished up playing the nickel slots. I cashed out and filled my cup with 1000 nickels. If it hadn't been for my buddy having poor luck and wanting to leave, I would have went off to a corner and carefully examined every one of those nickels. Sure, they were not in the best shape but how often do you get the chance to go through so many without picking up a butt-load of rolls ? I intend on going back down by myself to win another cup and go through them. Also..... I went to a very upscale strip club. Everyone that has ever went to such a place knows that when they give you change, you get all ones. So, what do you think I was doing in the strip club ? Yep, you got it. Instead of watching the beautiful ladies, I was sitting there going through serial numbers, looking for Stars, and checking for Web Notes. Do you think I have the bug ? LOL
I knew I had it bad when I wouldn't give the kids their Chuck E Cheese tokens until I went through them looking for dates. Sad, sad, sad.... We went to the casino in Kansas City on Friday night. No coins. None. They don't use coins anymore. You put your bill into the machine. When you're done you hit the cash out button and it prints a ticket. You take the ticket to the next machine and put it into the bill slot. At the end of the night you print out your ticket and put it into a nother machine and it spits out your money. Not a single coin.
Yeah, I seen that some of the newer machines were printing out those tickets. It just doesn't have the same feeling. Good one on the Chuck E Cheese tokens ! LMAO
I bet they still make some noise to add to the atmosphere of the casino. And, as for having the coin bug bad. I got back into the hobby a couple years ago: I was having serious financial problems, so I started going through my collection, figuring out how much I could get for selling it. Long story short, I realized how much I loved the hobby, so I sold my car instead of my collection. I loved that car too.
Althought not as bad as some of you, I think I have it somewhat.. Here are a few of mine.. You've way over payed on a coin, because you really wanted it... Like a lot of us, Every single time I get change back I look over each coin checking the coin's dates and Mintmarks... I thought about sending a sewer lid to that guy that makes the Hobo Nickels to see if he can carve me a CC-Morgan or something cool out of it... Then I'll get it Silver dipped with my own Silver that I have laying around as Generic Rounds... Last night, I was really busy working on several "Home/Honey Do" type projects and did not have time to go out for dinner... I was starved, so I sent the wifey to go pick me up something... When, she gave me back my change, I was more interested that it had my 1st 2007 (d) Dime than the food... I even realize till my wife pointed that one out to me... Every one of my PCs has some type of Numismatic Background... I've got two different Coin and Paper Money calenders in my office cubicle. While talking about presents, I told my family that if they want to get me something, a paypal gift cert would be perfect, so I can buy coins off of ebay or maybe a USmint Gift Cert... I was actually jealous of one of my wifes (few) coins and wanted one... I was mad at my favorite uncle when I caught him putting dimes and pennies on a old wooden fence post and shooting at them for target practice... The guy at the coin shop knows you buy name, when you usually come in and what your intrests are... When I bought my last two ASEs, he said, these two should finish the set shouldn't they? You've actually got a few co-workers interested in coins... People come to you to find out how much somethings (coins) are worth...
Family, friends, co-workers, ex-co-workers, fellow forum members.... I actually miss my old job, because now that I work at the wholesale level, I don't get to search the register's coins anymore.
i must have the bug bad and here's why. when passing the collection plate in church i 'stir the money' at times trying to spot something interesting! i feel guilty but i can't seem to help myself! i'm not sure what i would do if i just happen to spot something very attractive...............like a 20 dollar gold piece! i know i am a sinner now.
You know you have it bad when you start staring at all the coins in cash registers when you are buying stuff....
I was just getting ready to post that... I have always looked to see if I could spot something old (preferably a Dime or a dollar) and as of late, I've been looking to see if anyone has paid with Pres or SAC Dollar coins... Only ones I've seen we're at Subway, where I spent them the day before buying lunch...
Me too. I hate that but can' t stop. I have had the urge to yell "wait, don't close that yet, I think I see something in there".
I pretend to keep dropping the coin..but the other cashier, who knows what Im doing, usually gives me a look..lmao
I always try to be the first one to show up at local coin shows to make sure that someone doesnt buy a coin that I may want and I always try to make my first trip around the tables just glancing over the display cases in case something catches my eye, hopefully before everyone else. My wife gets upset with me for walking so fast.
