So...i feel like im getting addicted to Parthians! Just won my first two weeks ago, and earlier this week...i got another...this one is an Orodes II from Kangavar, and omits the stars and crescent on the obverse as seen on my earlier example. This coin is a stunner, with an expressive, detailed portrait, and a good rendering of the reverse archer. As i am learning, the reign of Orodes II was rather long by Parthian standards. He ruled from 57-38 B.C. and successfully defeated the roman general Crassus. Upon defeating Crassus, Orodes men poured molten gold down the general's throat (as a token of Crassus's greed) Subsequently, his reign came to an end when he (like many Parthian kings) was killed by his own son (Phaarates IV) Orodes II drachm 20 mm 3.84 gm Sellwood 45.21 Kangavar mint.
nice looking coin! this is my best looking parthian coin, pretty much as struck. Parthian Empire, Vologases III, Drachm, 105-147 AD. O: Bust with diadem to l. R: Archer seated to r. holding bow. Monogram A below, Ecbatana mint, 3.9 g, 20 mm, Sellwood 78.3
Nice job... you are becoming addicted... Here is an early Parthian: Parthia 177-138 BCE AR Drachm Diademed draped bust Mithradates I left bashlik - archer seated on omphalos Sellwood 10.1
Very nice coin @DBDc80 , and as @Bob L. pointed out, from a scarce mint to boot. Glad to see the Parthian love is spreading.
and before you know it you'll stop collecting US and then you'll consider selling your early dollars to buy more ancients - there is no turning back now Here is my only Parthian, but like you I could find them addicting. PARTHIA. Vologases VI, 208-228 AD. AR Drachm (3.41 gm). Bust wearing tiara / Arsakes enthroned holding bow, monogram 88. Shore.458. Sellwood.88.19
Here is my Orodes II... not in quite as good of shape as yours, but I still like it! The Obverse & Reverse are both Sellwood Type 43, I believe.
Nice coin man! I really like the series. It is a nice departure from mainstream ancient collecting, and im begining to specialize in these it seems!
I also have an Osroes II - Sellwood Type 85, a Vologases III - Selwood Type 78, and a Mithradates II - Selwood Type 27.2 (I think).
Nice Parthians, everyone. I have an Orodes II with the star and crescent: Parthia - Drachm Orodes II (57-38 B.C.) Rhagae Mint short-bearded bust left, torque ending in pellet, star before & crescent behind, no wart / Archer seated rt., Greek inscription, mint monogram. Sellwood 47.8 (?)
