Went to a coin show in Chantilly, VA, yesterday Mixed results. 1. [Good News] Got my rolls of UNC Oklahoma and New Mexico quarters (P & D.) 2. [Good News] MFD gave me a set of the 1982 cents, all seven varieties. Since it was early and Friday, I had a chance to chat with him. Here's a story to go along with the 1982 cents. Someone wanted two sets slabbed by PCGS. MFD told him what the costs would be. Guy said 'Go with it.' So the guy got two full sets of attributed 1982 varieties (seven coins) slabbed by PCGS -- for $300-400! Coins are worth about $5. MFD gave me the seven coins (unslabbed) for free as a gift. 3. [Bad News] And now my dummy of the day. I wanted a Buffalo 1938 D/S (I had just learned it existed.) Spotted one in PCGS MS-66. Fell over myself buying it. Went back to MFD and found out he was selling a PQ (same grade and TPG) for $100 less. D'oh!!! No way was I going back and asking for my money back. I don't work that way. Just chalked it up to stupidity for not pausing and thinking. At least I've got the coin. LESSON LEARNED: Give yourself time to think it through and shop around before you commit.
well, we all learn from our mistakes.. but at least you got your coin and at looks like you got some other cool stuff... stainless
Yep, definitely fun. Got to chat with MFD which rarely happens. Normally he's VERY busy. And I've now got a few more contacts for stuff I want. I'll be visiting them at the June Baltimore show. It you're not familiar with the Baltimore shows, they are BIG. 500-1000 dealers; normally 3 a year, but this year we also get an ANA show so it will be 4 biggies.
Maan, tough break. Great attitude though man. :thumb: Other than that, sounds like you had a good time! Congrats on that! :thumb: Any pics of this coin? Phoenix
Finally got my purchase imaged. Here's the freebie 1982 cent set. Nice thing is that I now have a example to compare to in case I ever try to sort them. http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1982var.jpg And here's the coin I bought (and overpaid for) http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/5-1938DS-MS60.jpg And just as an aside, here's two coins I won online: http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1952S-WashCarv-MS65.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1953S-WashCarv-MS64.jpg
Nice coins! I especially like the Buffalo Nickel. Sounds like you had a great time at the show. Which day are you going to the Baltimore show in June?
Since I'm retired I have more freedom. I generally go the first day a show is open to the public. And earlyish (11-12AM) I suspect that means Friday for the June show.
Yep, it's a nice one. But it would have been nicer if I had paid $100 less. I just have to make sure I think BEFORE I act.
Went to the Dulles show on Friday! Picked up some Jefferson RPM's which I posted in the variety nickel section, also picked up several Ike dollars and some coin supplies! BTW who is MFD? Do you know which D/S OMM you purchased? CONECA list 5 D/S OMM's for 38 Buffalo. This is a variety I plan on getting one of these days as well. How about some pictures!
MFD = My Favorite Dealer The slab is marked, but I don't know what it means. I'm rarely concerned about varieties. I just go for a representative coin. Nice part is that it's not an excessively expensive OMM. Images are up there on one of my later posts.
Sorry didn't see the picture posted the first time! Thats one nice Buffalo! I really like the way you lay out your pictures. I'll have to try that for inventory! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. Almost all of my coins are inventoried in that format. Then I make a copy on CD and store it away from the collection. I still have difficulty imaging REAL closeups. That's why the mintmark is a bit fuzzy. Someday I'll learn how to use my camera better. Or get a new camera.
