----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Curses! Clio'd again. He wasn't the only big bomber who thwarted my plans. On several "really really wants" my last-second bids (which I thought were generous enough) were low by several increments. More than one last-second bidder greatly exceeded my max on a few. I did pick up three nice Roman Egyptians although I won't post them until they arrive. I'm not seriously put out by the losses though... I'm sure a few people yell similar curses when I successfully bid-bomb their targets. There are a handful of names I dread seeing in CNG auctions since I never win against them. Clio has last-second bidding down to an art. You'll never even see him coming. If there is a coin you absolutely must have... better drop a huge bid in the final two seconds!
There was one coin I wanted to bid on yesterday, a Nabataean drachm of Aretas IV, but I got the hammer time wrong in my head, and logged in half an hour after the auction ended! I'm an idiot.
I've done that many times Very early this morning I was prepping for tomorrow's Kuenker auction. There's one solid target and a dozen possibles. I'm working during most of the auction and won't be able to bid live online. While trying to make a plan-- one which doesn't involve submitting ten book bids (which if all were won, would break me)-- I emailed Kuenker. Glad I did-- this auction does not have live internet bidding! Boo!! Hiss! The lucky attendees will probably be able to score some bargains in the absence of live internet bidders. I did put a book bid on one coin. I hate having to do that.
Good luck at Kuenker! I'll be rooting for ya! I'm not terribly upset. At the moment I'm working on a short (but complete) set of Vota LRB's, and when I'm done, I'm going to post the most boring thread ever on CT Ancients.
Um, I am now forbidden from ever buying from CNG due to where I live. I used to have it shipped to my sister out of state, but now they will not accept bids with a billing address from my state. So, I had several coins I wanted to bid on, and was going to bid on, but I am banned thanks to my idiot politicians.
LOL, Great stuff. Never have I bid on CNG and doubt I ever will. Agora & VAuctions are even rare for me. So I dont have this issue. No, not Vota LRBS!! Sucks to here, Chris. Would be pis*ed if it ever happened here. >(
I'm confused. Can you tell me more about your situation? What did the politicians do that prevents you from buying coins from CNG?
Minnesota passed a horrible coin law imposing laws even on dealers in other states, (unconstitutional), as well as defining any coin with 1% or more PM as "bullion". If its "bullion" the seller has to register with the state, post a bond, and tell the buyer the EXACT amount of pm in the coin, (which for ancients is physically impossible). So, instead of dealing with this law, or ignoring it, CNG just banned all MN customers. Funny, though, they are about the only ancient dealer banning us. There are a few pm dealers and a couple of Ebay sellers doing it too, but no other ancient dealers I know of. Of course, this has put a hurting on my purchases lately. I am thinking of concentrating on European auctions a little more I guess.
How horrible and utterly asinine! When did this occur? Any chance of that law being repealed, struck down, or amended to exclude what is clearly non-bullion numismatic material?
Its been a couple of years. The AG doesn't care about our thoughts, in fact he reject my ancient coin club's request to comment. The governor just got reelected, and am not sure if anything can be done while mini Chez Guevara is still in power here.
Tell ya what, medoraman ... I'll meet you at the border between Manitoba and Minnesota and then I'll pass you a few CNG coins and you can toss a sack full of cash back to me ... we'll meet in this farmer's field (sound like a plan? => what could go wrong?) =>
Two or three bullion thieves were selling overpriced junk to old Minnesotans. So in reaction they about destroyed the numismatic market in the state.
Same with me missed some hadrian tets rare onces. But price was to high for me, better luck nexttime. Cheers, Eric
I get Clio'ed all the time. But I don't feel bad about it... when I see the name when the lot closes I know I never had a chance to begin with. Same thing as seeing that a coin has been staked out by TIF or Steve .
