Some explanation first: strictly speaking, I finished the 12 C's set in silver earlier. But for the digital tray, I wanted to focus on the portrait (obverse). I just wasn't completely statisfied with how some of the portraits of some of my coins looked together in a digital tray. Yes, I am like that. Four coins acquired this year allowed me to finish it. So, I am thrilled to present to you my digital tray of the 12 Caesars: The latest and final addition is a denarius with a beautiful portrait of Augustus. Acquired in the NAC Spring Sale some weeks ago, I believe it coin was one of the coins with the lowest hammer price. Good for me, and it proves the theory of @MSG 78, stated in his thread earlier. (Even though N=1 is not substantial evidence, and in another auction it did not work out ... ) In any case, I am very happy with it and I believe this portrait fitst best in the tray. Three other 2020 additions are proudly displayed in the digital tray too: the Caligula denarius, the Vitellius denarius and the Domitianus denarius. The Caligula is rough, yes, but I love the portrait! (And money-wise, it is at good as it gets for me). The Vitellius and Domitianus denarii have been posted on this board before and are two - for me at least - very beautiful types I was able to obtain. Please share your thoughts, comments, and your 12 C's coins and / or digital trays!
Wow, VERY nice collection, @Limes ! Great feeling to finish it! Uh-oh... now that is done... you have to chase something else! I have the Bakers Dozen approach: The 12 Caesars and the Guy who ended the Julio-Claudians... Seutonius 12 and the Vindex Cleaning man! Tets, Denarii, Quinarii, Dupondius, As, etc...
Congrats and nice looking set. Mine is shown below. Note: The Titus coin is no longer mine as I traded it for another. I'm just too lazy to reshoot.
Congratulations! I don't see myself ever completing that set, because I can't imagine spending enough money on only two coins to buy the Julius Caesar and Otho that I still would need. (I can use a combination of silver and bronze coins for the other 10.) But hey, who died and made Suetonius the king of Roman numismatic goals? I can do 12 in a row in silver -- it's just that it's from Vitellius through Commodus (counting Aelius Caesar), rather than Julius Caesar through Domitian!
Thanks for the replies, all! @Alegandron, great display. I still really love that portrait of Augustus on your denarius. Splendid! @Andres2, great set up for your digital tray. Leuk gedaan, met de portretten van de keizers erbij. @Bing, great coin of Caligula, lovely portrait! That's true DonnaML. Budget-wise, a portrait issue of Caesar is probably the most expensive. However, the second most expensive one in my set isn't Otho, it's Caligula. Ofcourse, you can collect anything you want, and not what you don't want. And you can put anything in a digital tray too, of course. Thats the beauty of this hobby, isn't it? The reason for me to collect the 12 C's, is because I have the book by Suetonius, and I thought it would be great to collect them
Thank you very much. I captured that from a friend of mine in NC. He insisted it be graded. Did it for free for me as he was sending a bunch in. Upon return, LOL, I broke it out... Of course you're right. By the way, I was able to buy perfectly decent-looking asses of both Caligula and Claudius -- I spent a little more than $300 on the former and about $150 on the latter. I didn't even consider trying to buy denarii of either of them, which I agree would be even more expensive than an Otho denarius (about $1,000 for Otho, and quite a bit more for either Caligula or Claudius).
Sorry I am late in replying. That is a wonderful virtual tray @Limes . I really like the choices you made for several coins. First, that Tiberius is awesome. It also happens to be the same type I own for my 12 Ceasars denarii. The tribute pennies are everywhere and I find this type far more interesting. If you want a challenge find the same type for Augustus. Augustus on the obverse and Tiberius in the quadriga on the reverse. I searched 3 years for mine. That Galba is a wonderful and very sought after type. I love the reverse image. Nice pickup indeed. The Otho is very nice as well. I am so happy to see a denarius of him that is not Secvritas. The Vitellius has a much better portrait than the usual denarii. You cannot get more iconic for Vespasian than that Ivdea Capta. The Titus elephant is definitely on my list. I want both the right and left facing portraits though. Your Domitian portrait has a lovely style about it. Overall a wonderful set. I find the choices people make for this set to be interesting. there is so much variety to be had. Which is why of course at one time I had 3 sets in silver.
Great achievement @Limes, wow ! the whole set in silver !! I had to make myself happy with various denominations, as many other collectors here Q
