I waited a while before posting, seems like there for a while we were bombaring the forum with Gordian III coins. @Sallent kinda inspired me at the end of last year. This coin though took over a month to close the deal. Yeah, a long time for a common coin I know. I'm not going to bore you with the details. I went way out of my comfort zone to acquire this coin, a leap of faith if you will. In the end it all worked out were I think both parties involved got what they wanted. I got a decent coin for a fair price. And one of our newer members got some experience. With that being said, I most likely wouldn't have bought this particalr coin. This Gordian with the reverse was on my list but wasn't on this years agenda. So, I feel I need to reach out to give @ChasPay a thanks for the opportunity to knock it off the list way before I planned. My picture sucks, for that my appologies. I want to get a better pic but time hasn't really been on my side lately. It's truley a nice coin. The bright shine would be the biggest thing I don't care for. I did attempt to make it less so in the photo edit. But its well struck and like I said the price was fair. Gordian III AR- silver ant. 22mm, 5.5g, Rome 241-244AD GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG radiate, draped bust right VIRTITI AVGVSTI Hercules standing right leaning on club set on rock, lionskin next to club RIC 95 RSC 404 As always share what you want to share, comments to.
Thanks, Yeah when I weighed it I though it was to much. Had to reach out to Sallent to calm my nerve, lol. Heaviest of my G III's but about a half a gram.
The strike on the reverse is exceptional, and it's struck from very fresh dies. I would have jumped on that coin any day of the week. Gordian III ants are easy to get with sharp obverse details - it's the reverses that are tougher, and that one is a complete winner.
I think someone here had/has one about 7g? Could be wrong, but I have seen them in the 6 & 7g. Would love to own one that heavy.
Thanks, JA. I saw it posted on my previous G III thread. Some PM's led to emails which led it home to my collection.
You may not be happy with the picture, but the coin's eye appeal shines through. A very nice acquisition.
@Smojo what a delightful coin. It is exceptional. And yes, we did bombard the forum with Gordian. I shall return to him shortly, but for now I'm taking a small break to hunt down some more Roman Republic denarii. And here is mine, not as nice as yours, but I still enjoy it.
It was worth waiting for. I paid just a little bit more for mine than you did yours @Sallent . But if you recall I was real hesitant about it, how needless as it was. I don't often deal with a seller that has no known back ground, this gamble really paid off well.
I've been trying to get more book type references. RSC by Seaby even though published when I was just a wee lil kid is an affordable focus as of tonight I have the first 5. Volume 4 (which was the 1st I bought) starts with Gordian III, he has several AR to choose from for the relatively short reign time. As @John Anthony pointed out finding a sharp obverse isn't that difficult but a sharp reverse is a bit of a challenge. I bought this from a scan which is something I don't care to do. But I am really happy that I put the wheels in motion to aquire it, in hand it's, well delightful. I'm just as happy that the seller worked with me & gave me first dibs on purchasing it.
Great coin! My GIII 'Farnese' Hercules is one of my favorites of his, even if the die-cutter deviated from the model by making Hercules look up rather than down.
My club is not as well studded but it rests on a pile of three rocks. Every die has its own personality.
