Never seen spots like this, any ideas what may have caused it? The other coins in the capital holder are fine. Got this proof set cheap, just wondering what it is. Thanks!
Looks like mold or something . Like jpcienkus said looks as though someone coughed on it . I'd try some acetone or xylene .
Soaking in acetone now. I like the sneeze or cough scenario, but spots are on both sides - yeah probably exposure to some "contaminant" that stuck to the coin. Then contaminant has subsequently grown a culture, oxidized or crystallized on the coin. Will post follow-up. Thx.
Sell it and find a 58 Proof Franklin that's attractive. I don't think those spots are coming off without a fight or without leaving scars behind.
The coin was probably dipped in a silver cleaning solution (think jewelry cleaner) and not properly rinsed after the dip leaving some of the cleaning solution on the surface of the coin.
Yea, got the majority of the gunk off, coin still looks bad under magnification. Coin has some pitting and I added a few scratches in the process so....going to toss it into the BV bag and get a replacement like messydesk suggests.
