I'd like to put together a 1903 and a 1917 (or something around those times, the more common all the coins are and cheaper, the better) sets of 1c, 5c, 10, 25c, 50c, and maybe $1 but could probably skip that. I'm trying to figure out if I should look for one already put together (since the cost of shipping individual coins, plus the case, etc., etc., will just turn it into a $100 item), or if I can put it together myself (or get it fomr one of you) for less. Where would you buy the case(s), and where would you ask for a "1903 set" so to speak? If I could get them all from one place, then shipping might not be too bad. For this, low conditions of each coin would do it (for the most part, enough so you can see them, but I do not want each coin to cost $100 in the set). If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, here's a set from 1903 (I'd like exactly this (in the case) in the end). In the set below however, the 5c and 25c and probably lower than I'd prefer (in terms of quality). But the others are right about there, could even be slightly lower. In other words, the $1.00 Barber dime would cut it.
The year 1903 and 1917 doesn't jump out at me as any key date coins so if I were you I would get the coins one by one at either shows or at your dealers. Your dealer should have the cases....I think mine does.... shoot me a PM if you want and I'll see what my buddy charges for the cases... Speedy
Haven't done the show or visit dealer thing yet (which might end up costing me even more money heh -other purchases). I'd get cheapies off ebay ($1.50/coin) but I don';t want to be killed with the shipping fee ($3 to ship a $1 coin, heh). As I PM'ed, there are some dealers who have $25+ sets, which is probably expensive for the coins, but less expensive than trying to get them one by one.
This year I made up year sets as Christmas gifts, for my brother, father, and grandfather, for the years they were born. My brother, born in 1986, I got all at face value (but am getting him a proof set too). My father (1951) I managed to get all of them for $10. My grandfather's looks really nice... did a full set for 1924, penny thru dollar (sadly, half dollars weren't minted this year, a walker would have looked nice in this). Imagine a peace dollar, standing liberty quarter, mercury dime, buffalo nickel, and wheat cent together... spent a bit more than I wanted, but love the way it looks, and know he'll love it too.
Just saw in the USAA gift catalog that they're selling 5-coin year sets (penny thru half dollar) for any year 1934-2005, along with a little presentation folder mentioning events that happened that year, $24 each. This sounds like a good deal for like 1955 or earlier but think it would be cheaper to do it yourself for anything more recent than that. I can tell you that doing this for 1924 cost about twice that, lol... Anyway not too hard to do yourself if you're so inclined. I've seen many coin stores that have plastic whitman holders esecially for year sets. Cost about $1.49 for a 5 coin set (penny thru half) or $2.49 for a 6-coin set (penny thru dollar). They also now have 5-quarter (great for state quarters) and 5-nickel sets. How much it costs to fill a given year depends on what mint, and what condition of course. For the 1924 set I got the quarter on eBay and got the rest at local coin stores.
Capitol plastics makes these holders for almost any combination of coins for year sets..here is a 1934 that I put into a holder made for the Ike dollar years.Peace and Ikes (and Morgans) are the same size.
well, i like the sets of morgan coins. I dont know that it would be all that much worth it to make the sets of those coins. i'd personally rather collect one such thing. like morgan dollars. or franklins. or Ikes. But, your greenage is your dollars, so do with it what you will, IMHO. :secret:
I'm not sure I'd want to put something together for 1934- but regardless, I'm nt eligible for membership to USAA, so...
