I got one of these for Christmas in the Mid 70's. I was looking on ebay for one and they run $20+. Found this at a yard sale or $1.00. This is great for searching cent, nickel, dime and quarter rolls. You dump the roll in the tube and slide the lever back and forth under the magnifier (Not sure the magnification 7X or 10X) and you can flip the coin to view both sides then when you pull the slide back for the next coin the coin you looked at falls out the bottom. Love it.
Must be nice. All the yard sales where I live that I check out never have anything like that. I did find, and I quote, "rare 2004 d Florida quarter, encapulated, $70". Apparently, they haven't noticed the billions of state quarters in circulation the past eight years. Don't worry....I didn't buy it. Guy~
In may of this year I found a box of whitman albums. The box had 12 Ike 9131 albums and 2 SBA 9149 albums in it still plastic shrink wrapped and paid a grand total for $3.00 for the box. Sold 11 of the Ike albums on ebay for $12 apiece. At least my wife stopped asking me "What are you buying that for" after this. Still have the other three albums, still deciding to if I should sell them or fill um!
Never had much luck with finding coins or other bits of numismedia at yard sales, but I once came across a case of 12 antique ball jar canning jars in blue, they ended up going for $30 a pop on ebay, another time I found a 1st edition clive cussler hardback copy of Raise the Titanic for $1.50 easily a $50 book.
I had a scan-o-matic when I was a kid. I don't know what happened to it. It's fine for circulated coins, but it tends to nick them up a bit so don't use it on anything valuable.
well my cuz that knows i collect coins found, a box full of 20th century plastics pages never opend for $3 ,theres like 1000 pages for 2x2 coin holders.
Think I've said this many times before. If you go to a garage/yard/estate sale, you have to ask for coins or old currency. Even foreign coins. If you do not ask, they will just sit in the house somewhere. Most people will not put anything that is monitary out on a table at such sales due to how they could vanish. Not real often have I found any coins but several times this worked. Once a lady went into the house and came out with a small pile of Whitman folders, not albums, but the old folders. Paid face value for coins worth about 10 times that. My biggest success was at a garage/yard sale when I asked if any old jars, cans, boxes of coins, a lady went into the house and broght out a jar she could hardly carry. Said it was distined to go to a bank soon. The bottom was loaded with Indian Head Cents. She said I could have it for face value but would have to sit there and count them. Instead I offered $50 and she took it. There was about $30 in face value but the newest cent was in the 50's. About 1/4 of them were Indian Cents. Lots of 20's and 30's and most in fantastic conditions. Total value? Fantastic. If you go to garage/yard/estate sales you have to ASK.
Oh, one more thing. Don't act like you are coin collector. I always act dumb and just say my son is into old coins so I'm always looking for some for him. That way I can pretend whatever is produced is just change. Not being dishonest, just smart. Like I said they will probably all end up in a banks coin counter if I didn't acquire them.
I love it !!!!! I'll remember this quote the next time I list my auctions on ebay!!! Now, I can take advantage of folks and NOT feel guilty about it. No more sleepless nights for me ! Thanks so much for clearing my conscience !!!!!
Like I said if I don't get the coins, they will probably end up in banks counting machine anyway. I've heard to many horror stories already from people saying I'm to late. They just took a pile of old coins to the bank. Anything over face value is still better than that. Not sure why you ever would feel guilty. Ever go to a used car lot.
My mom picked up about 15 Morgan dollars for $5 each for me. She loves yard sales. and estate sales... and auctions... HA
I also LOVE Yard sales and flea markets. I haven't found too many coins at yard sales, though I am considered shy, and I don't ussually ask. But now I will. At a flea market, I purchased a 2006 mint set for $10. They also had small bags of war nickles for $4.
