I read somewhere quite a long time ago that some common-date Barber halves in XF grades actually rate on the Sheldon-Breen Rarity scale as R-3 and R-4.... could that be right? I don't remember the source, but I recall that piece of trivia popping up. Somehow I can't believe that only 500 or less of some Barber halves exist in XF. Does anyone know anything else about this? This seems off to me. I know high-grade Barber halves are scarce, but still...
There is certainly many more than that but,,, Barber halfs are sort of hard to get in XF, AU and above. We say often Barber halfs come in 2 grades, worn out and expensive. The reasons are many, few were saved at the time. A half a dollar was a real commerce item and used heavily and lower mintages. It was not a popular coin design at the time and struggles now. All Barber's suffer from this as they are low on the radar for most collectors. That less than 500 in XF is not even close though - that is fiction.
