I just got an American Silver Eagle that was suppose to be a MS70, and it has a friggin crack/scratch on one side. Exactly now does that happen? it was packaged well. Grading was by "Numismatic Authentication Company". I notice that people collect error coins, would there be any desire for these? Also, i have a 2010 ASE proof that has a shiny silver back and matt raised surface, whereas the 2011 mentioned above is kind of dull all over. Is this how its suppose to be?
Are you sure the scratch is on the coin and not the holder? Also there are really only a few co's that are reliable. NGC, PCGS, and ANACS are the ones to look for. The rest of them are (more of) a crapshoot.
Numismatic Authentication Company is a basement grader. Meaning, do not believe anything you read on the slab. They will simply mark every coin as MS-70. Some ASE's (or any coin for that matter) are more dull than others. The more "shiny back" ones have better eye appeal due to a better, more full, strike.
Agreed. These smaller companies are trying to manufacture conditional rarity all the time. I would like to add, however, that a coin could exhibit a die break line and still be considered MS70 "exactly as it left the die". I know that's a really rare scenario, but it is possible.
Yeah, i'm very sure its on the coin. It cuts right across the sunshine ray and a closer look shows it stops and carrys on into the dress. I'm learning very quickly about the better graders.
Like I have said in many past threads: NAC (Numismatic Authentication Company) is a "basement slabber" grading company off of eBay that grades coins only MS-70 and PF-70. STAY AWAY!
I made a rookie mistake. I had read up on the graders and in my haste got this grader mixed up with NGC. Hey, i got my first coin about a week or so ago....quick and relatively cheap lesson since its going back. I'll know to slow down next time and pay closer attention.
Well the others have covered the explanation for the scratched 70, I take this one. Yes that is how they are supposed to be because the 2010 is a proof which comes with mirrored fields and frosted raised devices. The 2011 you described as being MS-70 or Mint State. It is NOT a proof, and it should have a dull matte surface with little or no contrast or difference between the fields and the devices.
