Today has been a great day. I went to my parents today so they could see th kids and my dad and I were talking about things (my dad is truely my best friend) when I told him I was going to start collecting coins with Jakob, my son.
We talked about it for a little while and he said, "you know, I collected coins when I was a kid". I did not know he ever had an interest in coins.
He told me he never was a big collector and did not get very many before he gave it up. I asked him what he did with them and he told me they were in his upstairs closet. He went and got them and said here is a gift to start yalls collection.:mouth:
I was shocked because I definately did not expect to get any coins from him. I breifly looked in them and he has a bunch of old silver dollars and a lot of halves and a bunch of other old coins. The coolest thing to me was the three albums that are half way filled with coins. He dated them March 9, 1944 and signed his name at the bottom.
That was great and then when I got back home my redbook was in the mail box.:kewl:
Like I said, it has been a really good day. I will let you know as I get these coins seperated.

Thanks guys. I will probably spend all day tuesday (my day off) looking at these coins. It sure did put a log on my flame for coin collecting. (It was already roaring Btw)

Good story. I bet your Dad will be thrilled to see you take that collection and run with it. A lot of my best coins from when I started were from my Dad. When I send him a picture for example of a Flying Eagle I have, he says he remembers that. I hope one of my Gran kids will start, because both my daughters show no interest. Not in a bad way...they are just not interested.

Good story. I got a few books from my father just within this last year. I need to work on completing them.

Thanks guys for all the kind words. Come to find out my son new he had them and has been asking him for them for a few years but my dad said no to him because he did not think he was old enough not to loose them. Last night he told both of us not to pawn them off. lol

    That's great!

One thing to consider...if the coins in the album that he signed are not extremly rare (you do not NEED them to go into some other album), just leave his old album exactly as he handed it to you. 25 years from now you'll be glad you have that intact heirloom.

So you would not recommend filling in he holes in his album. I wasnt going to take them out but just feel it with others

Great story! Glad you have a memorable start to your collection. My father got his collection as collateral on a loan (that fell troughh) that he made to a business associate. This guy was a coin dealer who had once (35 years ago) accused my best friend and I of stealing coins from him. A couple of years ago dad called me up at christmas and said he had a "nice surprise" on its way to me.
    Karma works in mysterious ways.
My 1840/rev.1838 XF-40 Seated Half (with an error to boot) was just a small part of the gift my father gave me.

Anyways -- let us know what treasures you received.

Wow, what goes around comes around. LOL
My story is definately something that I will remember for a long time. I just dont know what I want to do with those albums my dad started. Do I finish the album and then put tit up or just leave it unfinished as it is. Either way it is not something I will ever get rid of. There are no key coins in the albums, mostly commons but I just dont know what to do.
    What do yall think?

Sorry, I thought I had posted this morning but evidently it did not go through.

If you want to fill the remaining holes, I don't see any harm in that. I was worried when you said "I will let you know as I get these coins seperated" that you were going to remove them from the albums.

But since you asked for opinions, I would leave the signed/dated albums just as they are.

No, I would never take the ones out of the folders. He had a lot of coins in boxes to. I think I am just going to leave those two folders as they are. It will be something that can be passed down to my son and his kids.
    Thanks for the input
