Of all the wheat cents I've collected that we're in circulation, this by far is in the best condition. (Aside from the fingerprint & smashed 8 on obverse, & the discolored spot & scratch on reverse, it's a nice coin) I almost pushed it aside as a new shield cent, until I saw the wheat design on the back. My first thought was that a commemorative coin was issued with a wheat back...until I saw the 1958 D on the front. Never judge a cent by its color..lol
Ok I looked it up, I guess it isn't the worst advice ever.. but I don't want to clean it, I'll let its next owner do that.
Only use pure acetone not fingernail polish remover. As it has other ingredients that may harm the coin. Available at Walmart or a hardware store.
It doesn't appear to me to be "all that". RB likely and hard to see it grading even MS62. Even at MS65, there would be many far ahead of it in the pop reports. Looking again, I'm not even sure it would MS, too many hits among other things including weak strikes on both sides.
You pulled it out of circulation. The blue stuff looks like paint and there is a big ole fingerprint on the coin. Plus what is that big brown stain on the back? This is a good coin to see what the acetone will remove and not remove.
I know...I wasn't saying this is the best out there, I was saying this is the best that I've seen. I'm sure those of you who've been collecting for a while have seen better but I'm sure even you remember the day you found that first coin..
Yes you pointed out the exact things I pointed out when I posted this thread. It's funny how every coin collector has a story about how this or that coin would be perfect if the stupid person who found it hadn't cleaned it first. Pretty much every website says DO NOT CLEAN IT... but yet I get 'a talkin to' when I post a slightly dirty coin.
