For about a week, I posted a BU Roll of 1964 Kennedy Halves for sale on the For Sale section of CoinTalk. I asked $200. Yes, that is over spot but for BU condition 1964 Kennedy's, I didn't think $10 per coin was asking a lot. However, I had absolutely no inquiries regarding the roll from CT members. So, I pulled the ad and put the coins on Ebay as a Buy-It-Now or Best Offer for $260. I had some offers of $160, $200 and $220. However, I declined. After about a week on this format, I switched to the Auction format with a starting bid of $0.99 and a Buy It Now for $249.00 with No Reserve. Dangerous but silver usually balances out at the end. The auction ended today and with 60 seconds to go, the bid was at $222.50. I had 19 watchers so I expected the bids to increase but some by the end of the auction. However, it jumped a lot. I was quite surprised at the final result of the auction. $355.90. Here is the link to the item: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111297301793?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1559.l2649 By the way, the buyer has already paid via PayPal. I spent $12 on postage/insurance/signature confirmation to make sure that it arrives there. Taking away Ebay & PayPal fees as well as shipping costs, I averaged $14.88 per coin. About double spot. Did I miss something with these coins? Did someone just really want them? Any insight would be appreciated.
I find that sometimes bidders will put larger than average bids to ensure beating all other snipers even though they don't expect to have to pay their max bid. It looks like you had two of this type of sniper and in the price jumped up nicely in favour of you. Congratulations on your luck! For some reason I always take it as a compliment if one of my postings is 'worthy' of a snipe bid.
Indeed, congrats on the sale! I've noticed quite a few unreasonably high bids on the coins I was selling this last month.....one of which quadrupled it's $60 purchase price just a few weeks earlier. It might have something to do with people being housebound during a storm and just really wanting the coins BADLY!!! We've all been there LOL! It really is a great compliment to you & your listing. I am eternally grateful to the buyers who overspend with me.
Why did you write that they come in the original plastic holder from the US Mint? There was no such thing and these coins are in a Whitman style plastic tube that costs about a dollar at any coin shop. The description was deceptive and it invites a return or SNAD claim.
I just happened to be watching HSN Coin Collector's Vault last night and Mike was selling the 1964 and 2014 Kennedy BU Half dollars for $29.95 plus $5.95 shipping. Since the 2014 was a clad coin, I would put the 1964 at $25 of the total. Based on the fact that they sold hundreds of these coins, it sounds like you got robbed at $14.99/coin. HSN did include a storage pouch for the two coin set. I value it at a buck. http://www.hsn.com/shop/half-dollar-coins/co0065
Perhaps not, but his point is still valid. Who knows why the buyer paid this price, but it is not outside the realm of possibility that said claim played a part in his decision to bid/buy. If so, and if he realizes the misrepresentation sooner rather than later, the OP can only hope a SNAD and return is all he will receive.
Personally, I think the fella that bid $350.90 on Mar-11-14 07:17:11 PDT is the one that did you a favor as literally EVERYBODY that bid was outbid which causes kind of a fever. Bid/Outbid well I'll just up0 it by $5.00. Bid/Outbid WTH? up it another $5.00 Bid/Outbid! Whoa!
You can find exactly the same "Mint sealed roll 1964 halves" on ebay for BIN for $270. Those even have a "seal". I don't think that's the explanation. I think it was just a ugly cold Sunday afternoon in 2014 (50th anniversary) and 2 guys who don't know the value of these but want to buy some for some reason got in a bidding war. Seller just got lucky.
HSN's prices are irrelevant, they sell significantly above retail value with only rare exceptions. They are spending thousands of dollars on their tv time and have to recoup that expense.
please see my signature statement. it has only bitten me once, at which point, i resold it and made $4 even after fees.
Kennedy items also seem to be getting good prices this year for the 50th anniversary. I know the few holes I have left in my collection are getting more expensive to try and fill...
