Would you pay the US Mint $32.95 plus $4.95 shipping for each of the 2012 Presidential Golden Dollar $25 rolls? As you may know they are no longer available at the banks for $25 each roll. I have the first 20 rolls of golden dollars issued since 2007. It seems nobody really wants them. Does it make any sense to pay the extra through the Mint just to have the ongoing set? If you want to collect these, what is the best way? What do people here think?
If you want the original rolls that's the only choice unless you find them on eBay or something. Doesn't the mint only charge the shipping for the whole order and not per item?
I was in the same boat you were for a while. I was collecting the rolls for several years both P&D mint marks. After a while I just decided it was not worth spending the money especially when I could use that money to buy other coins that I liked whole lot more. Plus the storage space/weight that it was taking up was the final tipping point. I ended depositing the rolls into my bank so that I had some extra money for coins and other things
I've been ordering a roll of each president (P & D) since the beginning. Don't ask me why.....must be a quirky collector thing. One thing I do ,when I order, is to add a few more items to my purchase and make that $4.95 shipping work for me. Yeah, it's pricey I know, but I'm this far into it. And I'll echo stoster on the weight. Danged things grouped together are indeed quite heavy.......
Unless you are really serious about collecting a roll of each or rolls generally or have the money to do so, I say drop it like a hot rock. I collected the first couple of years then liquidated to purchased better coins (better - like more and better investment). If your budget is on the modest side, there are better numismatic pursuits to spend your money on other than rolls of dollars. PS I would purchase a roll of Nixon and Reagan.
It's a losing proposition. Take a look at what Mint rolls of State Quarters are selling for on FleaBay. (Actual sales....not what the seller is asking) Chris
I think you guys are right. The only redeeming value is that since 2007, I've been able to save $500 or so, money I wouldn't have otherwise. They don't seem to appreciate, and interest rates are so low, it's not really worth putting them as cash in a savings account. Hmmmmm, wonder if they have any melt value?
No melt value, convert to cash and purchase a couple of really nice coins. Perhaps your lcs will take them on trade, then you would not need to pay sales tax on the coin(s) you get.
i am still not use to this tax on coins in some areas, happy i dont live in those places. but i agree with everybody else, doesn't seem to be much for the new dollar coins
I'm filling up 2 P&D books, just to do it. See alot of sellers breaking down these rolls for profit. I'm out about $12 every release, and they probably will never be worth what I put in (at least in my lifetime).
I don't collect the Presidential series, I do get them when I buy the Silver Proof set so at least I get one each year. So at least for me, I won't be ordering any rolls.
I'm just filling up an album with them. I used to just get a roll's worth from the Denver Mint gift shop (at face value), pick out the best one I can find for the album, sell a few to my parents and anyone else who wanted them, and spent the rest. I'm still keeping up with the series; the mint's online store never really runs out quickly (quite a few 2011 dollars are still for sale) so I do the same thing, buy a roll of the Denver ones, pick out one for the album, sell or spend the rest to recoup the costs at least partially. I just want to keep up with the set and fill the album. Getting basically a refund for the face value (by spending the extras) and combining shipments of stuff I was buying from the mint anyway means each coin I keep costs about what it would to get them individually anyway. (This is basically what I do with Kennedy halves every year too.) I'm a coin collector. I collect coins. I couldn't care less what they'll ever be worth because almost nothing I own will be sold in my lifetime anyway. To be honest I'm a lot more interested in the National Park quarters anyway. Love some of the designs. Hawaii was especially impressive; love all the lava detail, makes for a very dynamic design.
Yeah, I know you guys are right. Still, if I have to, I've got a bit of 'rainy day' money to go hog wild with (even though I'm under water with the purchase).......
Just wondering, since you been buying for so long have you been lucky enough to get any of the errors, like the Geo Washington, no edge lettering? :thumb:
I haven't busted any of the rolls open yet so I really don't know Fret. It'll be fun future project.....
