I picked up this birth year set for 10 dollars, which seemed decent considering I liked the toning. I'm not going to send these coins in for grading, but I'm just curious. Would the cent's reverse get an AT grade? How about the half dollar obverse? Both look neat, and you can tell the cardboard/paper had sulfur or something in it. By the way, is this from the Mint?
I think you might have a 50/50 shot at them grading NT. No, the Mint did not issue this as a product. Chris
Thanks. Now I know how some ASEs I saw at a show in pcgs holders graded clean. They had bizarre toning like the cent. They are probably put in something like this for 5 years or so. There was another piece of cardboard that slid through the back of the frame that was close to the coins, which is what caused the toning.
I personally don't think so but it's worth a shot if it gets into a clean slab. There would be plenty of people who would pay decent money for that.
Maybe one day I'd get it graded. I still haven't convinced myself to spend money on grading a few of the hundreds of nice coins I have. I'd still much rather spend any excess money on coins
That cent has a fair shot at grading, I've seen toning like that from mint sets and even rolls. This is one in my collection, PCGS graded MS-66 RB. The person who submitted it said almost the entire roll was toned with nice colors, some more electric than the others. All got graded too.
I would need to see better photos before giving my opinion on the market acceptability of the toning.
