A doubled die, or possibly a double strike (much less likely). You can clearly see that individual serifs are doubled, unlike machine doubling which doesn't show that feature. Either way, this is the "good" doubling.
thanks dave. I just got in the mail. Didn't even notice it until I was reviewing my pictures to check clarity. maybe ill get it graded.
It's a good rule of thumb that when you can see "clean airspace" between sets of doubled features - like this coin - you've got something interesting. That said, significant doubling like this on World issues is not uncommon, and it'd take someone better-versed in this issue to comment on relative rarity. Not all mints imposed the same quality control levels as some others.
