i just started collecting coins and i am pretty much strictly pennies for the moment. i just came across a 1994 d penny that is doubled on the obverse side. the "994" in 1994 are doubled as well as the mint mark. has anyone heard of this and if you haven't what should i do?

also, i am not sure about what a red, red-brown, and brown penny is. i just pulled a 1970 s small date but i don't know if it is red or what.

i would appreciate any help i could get. thanks.

    John,

Welcome to Coin Talk! It sounds as if your' 1994-D Cent has Machine Doubling on the Date and Mintmark but we would really need to see pictures...especially close-ups of the Date and Mintmark to make sure. Also, if you can provide pictures of the 1970-S Cent, we should be able to help you with it as well.

Welcome to the Forum John! I agree it sound like Machind Doubling, but please post some pictures.

As far as the colors of the cent (Red, Red-Brown, and Brown) they all are a type of Toning. You can read more about it here. http://rg.ancients.info/guide/toning.html
