Yes, I finally got one and it costs some bucks but hey, it was worth it. I know it's only VF-20 but what do you expect? It's 174 years old. And yes, it's from the Dohlonega Mint. Only 4,643 were minted. Not sure of the survival rate. I think it's the 6th lowest mintage in the series. Demand for Georgia issues is strong and continues to grow and the supply is low. This is my first and only Georgia Mint issued coin. It took years to get one. To me, the small mintage makes it rare. The photos are not mine but used with permission. That is why the barcode and numbers are erased. Hope you enjoy it. I do.
The NGC price guide says this coin costs around 230000 pennies. That's about 50 times the mintage of this coin. And it only has about 80 survivors today... 230000 is also higher than the entire mintage of 1871-S half dimes (an undervalued coin IMO), and 30000 lower than the lowest-mintage coin in my collection, but for something like this it sure was worth it.
You bet it was and I got it for less than 230000 pennies. What a bargain! What a coin! If it's down to 80 survivors I consider myself blessed to be one of the 80.
True. I consider myself blessed to own one of the 200 1852-O half dimes. Probably a bit higher than 200, but still. Imagine searching 230000 pennies. That's 92 boxes. It would take forever, but I would expect plenty of good coins out of there.
