They are a hoot to find. I was in a coin shop a few months back when a lady came in and said she was a waitress and had some things to sell. The dealer bought her 90% silver and turned down the 40%. She then pulled out a 2 inch stack of very worn silver certificates and he turned them down and advised her just to spend them.
I have searched close to $100,000 in $1 bills and never have I found a silver certificate. The only one I got was when a teller told me that she had a "fun dollar" I could have when I asked to buy $5 in cents.
Yes, I tried to buy some from my local bank if they ever came across any, how ever they also collect them
@Kentucky I've been passing along my SC's to family, friends, tips, etc just to keep them moving along. Hanging onto them with virtually no premium to face just makes no sense (or cents ). At least others get a momentary excitement when they receive them.
The bank I picked my silver cert up from was a random bank I just stopped by. The teller just happened to be super awesome. The only great thing I have gotten from any of my regular banks was a 1922S Peace Dollar at my dump bank. The teller knew what it was but she kept it so that she could give it to my son and I. Best score ever.
I make sure my grands get coins and currency with value. Silver certificates, unless they're in exceptional condition aren't worth any more than face. Believe me, I've funded their UGTA accounts enough to buy plenty of semesters in the schools of their choice.
I've had these four for 3 decades. Consecutive serial numbers. The bottom one looks strange. They are in great shape, never folded. Received as change from a grocery store!
