2021 has been a slow coin year for me, but recently I have strung together a couple of W’s 1) First a win from CNG this morning - Staters from Terina are beautiful. This one spoke to me and despite being very well worn I am very excited to add this to my collection. It is a relatively scarce reverse type with Nike in a slightly more open pose.. love this coin! BRUTTIUM, Terina. Circa 420-400 BC. AR Nomos (19mm, 7.63 g, 9h). Head of the nymph Terina right; tiny Π behind neck / Nike seated left on plinth, holding olive branch and resting arm on cippus [decorated with Π]. Regling, Terina 43 (dies V/νν); Holloway & Jenkins 47; HN Italy 2602. Toned, scratches. Near VF. From the Sigmund Collection. 2) Next up we have a long sought after upgrade of one of my favourite coin types, won from Stacks & Bowers. The reverse design really demands a well centered strike, and as with most Greek coins the aesthetic quality of the dies varies quite a bit. I finally found my upgrade CILICIA. Soloi. Balakros. Satrap of Cilicia, 333-323 B.C. AR Stater (10.97 gms). NGC Ch AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. SNG BN-196. Obverse: Baal of Tarsos seated left, holding lotus-tipped scepter; grain ear and grapes to left; below throne, Σ-O below and above; Reverse: Draped bust of Athena facing slightly left, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet. Quite engaging and alluring, this lightly toned specimen offers a well centered strike on each side. 3) Finally we have a coin that may set a record for longest time between purchase and delivery. I’ve discussed it in another thread so all I will say is purchased in Summer 2019 and received in Summer 2021. I’m just happy to have this sharply struck example in of a scarce type in hand. Khwarezmia. Sawrshafan. Ca. 751-762 A.D. AR drachm (26.4 mm, 2.81 g, 12 h). Crowned bust right / Horseman, holding whip, his name & title around in the Khwarizmian script. Wainberg-G5, Mitchiner, Indo-Greeks, type 500, cf. Zeno-143677. VF, Rough edge, chipped off flan 7 to 10:00. Detailed portrait. Rare.
Excellent haul! That Athena reverse is striking And I love coins of Bruttium BRUTTIUM. The Brettii. Ae Didrachm (214-211 BC). Obv: Helmeted and bearded head of Mars left. Rev: BPETTIΩN. Nike standing left, erecting trophy; star between. SNG ANS 38. Condition: Good very fine. Weight: 14.3 g. Diameter: 23 mm. Ex Artemide Aste BRUTTIUM, Rhegion Circa 415/0-387 BCE. Æ 11mm (1.76 gm). I’ve seen these Balakros staters attributed to Soloi and Tarsos.. What is the telltale difference in the coin - Or is is it just a difference in opinion?
Here’s the Regling 43 plate coin in all its glory. Mine is indeed a double die match.. But Regling’s was arguably in better shape and sold for a modest 80k USD back in 2014 .. in fact there are just 3 die matches on ACsearch. Among the others is this one, Jenkins 47 (plate coin) - again in somewhat better condition than my own To be clear, these are absolutely NOT my coins!
