Hi Everyone, I'll be attending the World's Fair of Money next month. This will be my first ANA show and wanted to ask if anyone had any tips on getting around in show that size. I've been to smaller shows so never had to contend with a very large coin show. Should I just work my way around from one end to the other? Any tips would be appreciated!!! Thanks
Well, I was supposed to be there, to sign my books, but... oh well, family matters came up. FYI: Both Ken Bressett & Dave Bowers will be there to sign books! Take advantage of the event, and have fun!
When I go to large shows I like to check out the auctions to see what is up for sale and how rare the items are, this is an opportunity to get up close with some spectacular specimens. So check the auctions then find the booths or register for the auctions so you can go to a viewing of your favorite coin types, it may be the best time for you to see some proofs which are out of your price range or maybe you'll find yourself actually bidding. The exhibits put out by fellow collectors are also very interesting people narrow their focus to incredible extents and private collectors often have the most amazing sets and the knowledge and history of their sets. I saw David Bowers at the coin show in Baltimore this past June, he gave a talk on Colonial Coppers, then I went to the Whitman Booth, bought his book "The Expert's Guide Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins". I sat down next to him in the Bourse and we chatted for about 10 minutes as he signed my copy, a great experience.
I will be traveling to LA for the show. Perhaps the CT folks could get together at the Figueroa Hotel for a drink at the end of one day. The Figueroa is quite near the show. very best regards, collect89
good point, wear comfortable shoes Wear comfortable shoes. Bring your wantlist, check book, wallet, magnifying glass, and something in which to carry all your purchases. I repeat, wear comfortable shoes. Very best regards, collect89
You tell us when I'm sure Jack and I will be there! If you can't make it to the bar, please stop by my table (356 and 358) to say hi, or you could even set my table as the gathering spot during the day if you'd like. I'll try to have cheese and crackers (the ANA frowns on serving alcohol, otherwise I'd be serving wine, but who knows!).
At most large shows there is a directory showing the location of each booth, and frequently what the booth's specialty is. Generally booths will be loosely grouped, so the main world coin sellers will be in one are, currency dealers in another, and so on. Since no one else thought to mention it, I will - Wear comfortable shoes.
Won't be able to attend but I'll hoist a few in honor of those that do.....and also those that don't.
I want to hit all 1,100 tables, but all I can afford are some really crappy shoes that hurt my feet. I call 'em the "Iron Maidens". Is it OK to bring those ?
1. Don't get overwhelmed. Browse and check out some of the rare coins displays, such as the early coppers, Morgan collections, etc. 2. Be comfortable. Dress casual and wear good shoes and socks. 3. If you are looking for a specific coin, and the dealer doesn't have it but said he or she had it a little while ago, that's a good sign to go away from him or her. That "I had it before" line provides an irritiating experinece and it ticks you off. 4. LA is a fun and interesting city and is the initiator of American trends. Take advantge of some sightseeing. The museums are great and the beaches are fun. Also, go down to USC which is a mile away from the show. See the campus, and the best college football team in the nation will be practicing. National shows are awesome, the ANA show is one of the best I wish I could go...
and if you go to the USC campus, stay on campus!!! don't wander off into the surrounding area. not the best part of L.A. can't wait for this show, but unfortunately I work full time so I can probably only make it for Saturday. Anyone else going to be there???? Maybe we can meet and show off our purchases????
Mike and any other CU people, please do stop by my table and show me your purchases, I would love to see them!
Well, I'm really upset with my granddaughter. How dare she schedule her wedding in Texas to conflict with the year's biggest coin show being held in my back yard?
So, should USC fans post pics of national championships (11!) from years ago to show you up? Nah, back to coins and paper.....
Head to head matchups only ! "but seriously, folks..." looking forward to ANA LA. Probably be at the Rose Bowl in January ! Had some purty good times there !
