World paper money

Anyone on here versed in world paper money?

I just picked up from someone a whole bunch of it for next to nothing. I spent hours carefully straightening them out and placing them in clear plastic folders. They are a nice display to go with the few older US notes I have. But I was wondering if anyone on here could tell me if I anything significant.

It contains 3 1912 500 Rupies from Russia (one in very good shape and all with a fantastic watermark--quite impressive for 1912), a 1913 dollar from Hong Kong, several 1940s French notes, a bunch of German Marks from the 19teens and 1920s, chinese notes that look old but written in chinese so I don't know how old, and a bunch of 1898 through 1920's in foreign languages so I don't have a clue what they are.

I could take some pics if someone knows there stuff in this area...

There are several of us who ave 'versed' in world notes so you have come to the right place!! just click the link in my sig to see my website, there are alot of wOrld notes listed and shown. I dont think i have ones like you mentioned though.

if you post images of your notes, any one of a number of us can help

if possible, maybe only post a couple at a time. posting 10 or more can get way too complicated when discussing the notes

 

Are you sure they aren't "Rubles", the Russian currency, instead of "Rupees", the Indian currency?

Or, perhaps, Japanese or another Asian language that uses Chinese characters?

the 2nd note does 'look' Russian. The letter characters have that look. It could be from any number of countries in the baltic region, as they all use similar characters (at least they alllook similar to me )

When i get home, i will look in my books to see what i can find out about it. But i have the feeling some other folks who can read the note might be by before i get home

The first note is from Hong Kong and is Pick Number 155b. It catalogs at $60.00 in Good and $250.00 in Fine condition. Yours is probably in Very Good condition.

It is a scarcer note and the catalog prices on the early Chinese notes are low. I would put it at $250-300.00 even in VG condition.

 

Why are there stamps on the back? Was this common?

 

The stamps on back are like chopmarks on Trade Dollars -- they were put there by merchants to show they believed the note to be genuine and not counterfeit.

 

The second note is from South Russia. It's listed in the world paper money specialized issue as a currency token issue #S418 and the price of the note is VG .40, VF 1.50 & Unc 4.00. Very nice notes bobbeth.

THANKS for those who help me on the first two.

Here are two more. Any help you can give me to identify what they are and worth would be much appreciated:

 

The first note was issued for use in the territory in Eastern Europe occupied by Germany during WWI. It is R-120 in the Germany section for those of you playiong at home with a Pick catalog. It cats at VG/20.00 VF/40.00 UNC/80.00.

The second note was issued by the Provisional Siberian Administration headed by Admiral Kolchak during the Russian Civil War in 1919 (PS-827 in the Pick catalog). It cats at VG/.25 VF/1.00 UNC/3.00

lettow, the German note had me scratching my head. I just didn't see it in my catalog. I looked in the section for German, Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Dutch, Netherlands, Poland, Russia and also EBay Germany. Did find one note selling for 1.50 Euros on EBay Germany. As for the Russian note my catalog also has it listed as a Treasury Token Currency Issue with the EF price of 3.50. Way to go lettow! :thumb:
