The club that meets in Woodland Hills, CA was the first coin club in the area that I joined because it is the closest to my home. It is a nice club that meets monthly. The meeting began with the door prize raffle where a few neat coins were being given away including a large French Indo-China silver coin from 1900, a silver Kennedy Half Dollar and a Walking Liberty Half Dollar. However, I wasn't lucky enough to win any of the door prizes. The club also has monthly quiz questions which are sent to the members in advance of the meeting. The question I got correct was "how many portraits of Jefferson appear on the first issue of the 25-cent note?" Anyone else know the answer??? For getting it correct, I was able to pick from a bunch of sealed envelopes containing coins and the one I selected had a circulated 1937-D Buffalo Nickel. Wasn't a 3-Leg variety, but still not too bad. The program for the meeting was by Phil Iversen on the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition held in Seattle in 1909. The program was a DVD of the presentation originally given at the last ANA show in Los Angeles. The program covered the exposition itself and illustrated several examples of exonumia from the exposition. I thought it was pretty interesting, especially since my collection focuses on the U.S. coins of 1909 and in my research and searches for coins I encounter AYPE material frequently. I believe the DVD of this program can be borrowed from the ANA Library if the topic is of interest to you. The meeting concluded with a raffle of approximately 15-20 coins, including a few silver coins. I bought $5 worth of tickets and only one of them was a winner and I ended up with a circulated 1907 Indian Cent. Not my best result from a club raffle, but not quite a shutout either. If any of you are from the area and are interested in attending a club meeting, guests are welcome! Please contact me if you are interested and I'd be happy to provide further details. :thumb:
When I was attending coin clubs as a kid my dad would buy $5 - $10 worth of tix and the 6 times I went I always won something. One of the best was a 1988 Proof Silver Eagle, worst was some Horatio Gates medal. As a kid I had no idea who he was, lol. Ended up selling it for $30 last year. Still have the Eagle though. As for your prizes, I would be a bit disappointed myself :/
Yeah, not the best I've ever done with raffle tickets, but I figure they even out over the long run. The meeting before this I ended up winning 7 different silver Roosevelt Dimes out of my $10 in raffle tickets, so that was a better one!
