I have seen a lot of wooden nickels turn up over here in New Zealand. Does anyone have any information as to why these pieces are issued? Where does the expression,"Not worth a wooden nickel" come from?
Never heard that one. I've heard, "Don't take any wooden nickels", and, "Not worth a plugged nickel". Here is a link with some info.
Jody, thank you for your posting regarding wooden nickels.Pity that no-one has ever thought of issuing a plastic nickel.
Actually, I have several plastic nickels. They are, like the wooden nickels, issued for advertising purposes.
Art,what do the plastic nickels advertise? Are they issued by a numismatic society as advertising pieces.
Usually they are issued by private businesses, retailers, and sometimes local governments to advertise thier respective business or commemorate some kind of local town celebration.
