"Wood" penny

    I found this odd 1979-D penny. It has diagonal stripes on each side. Error, coin damage, or something else?

    I think this is an issue with the mixing of the metals for the coin. I don't think it's an error and it isn't damage.
    They are fairly common and don't carry any sort of premiums. Still cool to see, though.

    It is called a woody. I guess of the choices you offer, it would be something else. Earlier ones are cause by improper alloy mixing, but I am not sure that is the case for these later ones. You might enjoy looking at or reading further here;

    yea its a woody, nice one too, read somewhere, maybe this forum, that you wont find them on zincolns, only the copper cents,,

    Unusual for that date.
    Most Lincoln woodies are from the 19-teens.

    actually while roll hunting cents, i've found a number of them from 60's an 70's, none as good looking as this one tho, but close..

    Those are the only ones I save anymore. I've found quite a few with those lines on just one side - but not many with it on both sides.
