MS-64, is that a rim ding on the reverse? Looks just shy of a 65, but a very attractive coin, wow. Not a bad strike either, slight weakness on the eagles breast, but not bad. Very nice man. :thumb: Phoenix
I spent half the night on Teletrade, so I will not cheat here, BUT, that coin ( I hate to say) is a crack out upgrade IMO. Moral dilemma....a dip then a year in a kraft envelope will do it for sure
What exactly is a kraft envelope??? I always hear people saying to put dipped coins in kraft envelopes to retone. I have a few coins that someone else dipped. Should I be doing this??? Should I leave them how they are now???
Liberty is fairly free of marks but the strike is a bit soft, especially in the eagle's breast. I'll give it a 64 with a chance at 65.
I'll get flamed for this for sure, dipping is like religion... Kraft envelopes are the yellow envelopes like old 60-s proof sets were shipped in, but they come in all sizes, Kraft is the type of paper I think. They " accelerate " natural toning, especially on dipped silver. Several sellers sell " original " proofset envelopes on Ebay, but almost always not the real thing. Thats where all the " unopened" proof sets come from, re-enveloping them. A TacoBell napkin is also used alot. A cigar box with a pack of matches inside ( sulfer ) will do it too. Don't use these to trick, but to learn from.......it is much more common than anyone will admit. 1% of coinshow dealers dip coins....the other 99% are liars
The cheek looks clean enough to warrant a 65 grade. Wonder if there's somthing hiding in the small photos, but I'll guess 65.
From the photos I'm thinking it could at least go 64--guess I'll have to wait and find out for sure when it arrives. Thanks for the comments...I'll post my own pics when it gets here. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2476&lot=1540&imagetype=
old abe would turn in his grave if he read this. scandalous to say the least you are making the charge that 100% of dealers dip coins what can possibly more ridiculous then that. What you are suggesting is also a form of AT there is no moral dilemna it is an immoral act any way you look at it. just my opinion you are free to do what ever you want with your coins. Some people tool coins, some people mislabel them, and some use slightly sophist acted ways at AT. I cant stop the first 2 from happening so i am not going to try to try for the third one either
No this is some good info. And learning is exactly what I want to do with it. Most of the collecting I have done was when I was very young. There was a long gap in between where I didnt do much with my coins. But now Im back into it heavier than ever. And now that Im back, Im collecting on a different scale than before. Im buying better coins in higher grades. And I want to know what Im looking at and what Im looking for. Granted Im not dumping big money into my coins, but then again $50 here and $50 there, that adds up. It may be a gray zone when it comes to telling people how to fool. But it is the best way to teach.
The percantage quote is from Scott Traverse's book,The Coin Collectors Survival Manual...I should have been more clear, sorry It has been discussed many times here, that a dip on a liner will greatly increase upgrade chances.....You failed to mention that I stated use this info to learn, not to trick I do not sell raw silver or dip my coins, that much should be obvious
I would crack that one out and send it in for a regrade. 63's are usually more chewed up, and even with the rim ding, I would bet it gets a 64. JMO- Mike
