Checking out the "upcoming products" section of the US Mint today I came across this...... http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&identifier=9100 Another search and this is what I found..... http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wome...-receive-congressional-gold/story?id=10057074 The honor comes years too late, but at least it is being bestowed.... Anybody gonna get one? I'm in.
I saw it too and am considering as well. Does anyone know what the typical mintages are for the 3 ounce versions? TC
I'm sure a story about fliers is right down your jet stream Ken :thumb: I also heard the story in CNN today about them finally getting their recognition! I recall having watched an interesting documentary film about these women some time ago on one of the History or Discovery type channels. It may have been "During the War Women Went to Work ..." § (2007) It was full of very compelling stories! Many things beyond the typical Rosie the Riveter in scope. I particularly liked the stories about the fliers whose job it was to ferry planes throughout the Asian and Pacific theatres. They all spoke so enthusiastically about the freedoms they had at the time coming out of their hometowns or small towns and going off to do their service. They spoke about their wrinkled clothes and meager possessions from life on the move. The honor they have finally received was very well deserved and the forthcoming Mint medal is a pretty cool design to honor them as well!
Heck, beats me. I only purchase the 1.5" bronze. The 3" is pricey but I imagine it will be issued in lesser quantities.....:smile
Mint Data Base might keep some record of medals, but I can only find info on the FS medals there right now. Maybe if you write to them they can tell you more. Would also add to that some medals links: Medal Collectors.org Historical Art Medals.com
That quote bears repeating. These women were a true asset to the war effort. The recognition they deserved was not forth coming..till now. These "ladys" weren't even granted "vet" status till 1977....
if they have that then they need to the SPARS (Navy/COAST GUARD ) because the spars were a major influence during the 40s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPARS (not much there) http://coastguard.dodlive.mil/index.php/2009/08/coast-guard-history-spars/ http://www.answers.com/topic/spars
