I know this is posting way ahead of time, but lodging is booking up for the Winter 2015 Fun Show. Two of the four hotels who offer special rates, through the convention site, are listing "No rooms available" at the special convention pricing. There may be a specific night still open but nothing for the complete show. Just thought I would give you guys a heads up if your planning to attend.
I thought the FUN organizers take a block of rooms, at reduced prices, for the show attendee's. This would mean they are all gone already, regardless of another show or not. I think you can still book the dates at approximately 35% more than the special rate. Rosen Plaza for instance, is now at $159 per night verses $119 per night. I stay 5 nights, so the difference is another $200 plus taxes. The Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando, looks sold out at any price.
Well, it's not really all that secure of a choice of accommodation especially for those attending coin shows who may be carrying valuables to sell/trade and various forms of money to buy things with. So having acquired new coins at the show, where are you going to store them for a couple days? Vehicle break-ins and being tracked in your vehicle seems to be among the riskier points people find themselves in compromised situation when attending shows. Plus, where are you going to legally park it? Camping grounds are about the only choice and aren't secure enough.
That's why you do some work on it and make it more secure. Essentially do to the van what the secret service did to obama's limo. A hotel may be less secure. People are able to make their own keys and hack the system to get access to anyone's room. Now if you had a super secure Van that is almost impossible to break into you would be more secure
One of the benefits of a convention hotel is direct access via walkways to the show. I have not found it necessary to rent a car while there. Besides the rental fee, I save the charge for overnight hotel parking. It is becoming a standard fee at many properties. $20+ per night at the bigger hotels. I am a runner for exercise, so walking is not a problem. Many times I'll skip the free shuttles and just walk for the sake of it. But you are correct. It may not be close or economical, but you can always find something.
Found this. What hall was it in last year? 60th Annual FUN Convention: January 8-11, 2015 - OCCC West Building, Hall WD, Orlando, Florida
Well Dang! If anybody needs a roomie, I'm available. My shirts stink of mustard. I fart and snore in my sleep and sometimes even snore while I'm talking. I rarely bath and usually cuss a blue streak when I'm drunk. PM me if interested in sharing a hotel room.
I see the show organizers went out and received special rates at two new hotels. They must have seen the need. They are the Springhill Suites and the Residence Inn, both in walking distance for most people.
I'm at the Rosen Plaza, third year in a row. I like their amenity package verses their rate. From what I can tell, I might have secured one of the last reservations there. Perhaps it is the time frame as well. I arrive Wednesday afternoon on the 7th and depart on Monday the 12th. That extra day on departure was a sticking point. There may be openings if your departure is the last day of the show, Sunday the 11th. I thought I would be to rushed if I did that.
