image.jpg image.jpg Would this coin grade VF/XF or get a Details grade?

There's an old cleaning and a retoning.
I think it' a borderline decision, I personally don't like the tiny scratches in front of the face.
    Good luck.

I would expect Executive Coin to disclose it if the coin were cleaned. They're good about that.

Looks lightly cleaned some time ago. With the wear I see and the scratches, I would not grade it.

Cleaned at some point, but maybe you could ask them?

Kinda my point. I know enough about photography, and enough about this dealer, to give the benefit of the doubt against one set of images. Not to mention there's a difference between a cleaned coin and a "market acceptable cleaned coin," especially with 1889-CC.

I completely agree with @SuperDave. I have bought plenty of coins from this seller and their photographs and descriptions are always spot on.

If anything, make them aware that you plan to send it in and see if they will accept a return if it gets a details grade.

I have seen a good many graded coins that are marked "cleaned" at least by ANACS...Eternity makes a market with them.

Although I am far from expert, I would like to comment that the limited wear on the coin coupled with the TOTAL lack of any luster (hard to tell in a photo) lead me to believe that it has been cleaned. If we saw parallel scratch lines, that would be a more positive indicator.

If the TPG doesn't call it altered surfaces than the coin could No Grade due to the planchet flaw on the neck. Either way if it could have made into a straight grade slab they, or any other dealer would have tried to get it in before selling it raw IMO. BTW TECC does state that is WAS "lightly cleaned a long time ago"

Not a bad coin, just looks over-dipped and lifeless.

I'm going with over-dipped. Those surfaces look lifeless with no luster to speak of.

I dunno; I'm not a TPG. They're the ones who do this, not me.

So how much luster do you expect on a toned XF coin?

I just purchased this '89CC after looking for about 6 months...and hope to get it in the next few days. It has no luster, but I really think it has great eye appeal. Personally, I would not consider buying a coin of this value unless it was slabbed and graded.

Probably a no straight grade, always expect some luster in XF and above, if it is missing where it should be grading services will not straight grade.

You might be surprised with the coin in hand. It does look really nice, and I'm guessing the photography (coupled with the color balance on the bean) may have subdued the reverse side luster.
