Will it CAC? #15 No Stars Half Dime Edition. Graded VG10 by PCGS. Be honest, is this coin getting a green bean or sent home in a body bag?
Honestly I'm surprised it isn't a details coin with those obverse scratches. The color is nice though.
Yikes, so much verdigris in addition to the scratches. I don't see how it could possibly get a sticker but I'm frequently wrong.
I suspect the scratches are adjustment marks, which are acceptable as they are mint-made. I don't like all the green stuff, though. I vote no.
This coin is getting slaughtered in the voting. In case you're wondering why I sent it in at all, I tossed it in with 5 other coins I thought were a lock for the green sticker, as sort of "I might as well". Really the postage and insurance is what kills you on small submissions, so adding a long-shot coin here and there is no big deal. Plus I asked for grading comments, so that should be interesting.
Why spend the money to send it to CAC? In VG it doesn't make any difference if it has a sticker or not. If there is a difference, I doubt that it will cover the cost of shipping and grading.
I wouldn’t send in a coin with that low of a grade as it wouldn’t make a big price difference. Then there’s the scratches and the verdigris on the coin.
Good question. I am trying to get a full CAC-approved Type set. Submitting to CAC was never about the value to me. It was just so that I had triple stamp of approvals for any coins included in my Type set. Meaning, (1) approved by PCGS/NGC (2) approved by me (3) approved by CAC. The end goal of course being sure that my coins are Authentic, problem free, graded within a reasonable range of the assigned grade, and attactive to me in various ways such as toning, circ cameo, blast white, old holders, etc. In term of why a VG coin at all, well I have a sub-goal of having 1 coin of each of the numeric grades, from PO01 all the way to MS70. Also, in terms of why VG, I am aiming for only coins I can "afford", so for me that is around $350 per coin max. So for this particular Type, the "No Stars" half dime, I need to be in the heavily circulated grades in general. Certain coin Types, I can afford up to high MS, but for some series, I am down in the very low grades. All that being said, the real reason I summitted the above coin, was that I accidentally won it for a low price, and I was already doing I submission so I tossed it in so I could get back CAC grader note in regards to the "Green stuff" and parallel scratches/ adjustment marks. So the TLDR: I wanted to use this coin as a learning experience with CAC.
I gave you the first yes vote (in part due to me being wrong on the previous two and possibly wanting to continue my streak of being wrong ).
I will never understand the fascination with CAC approvals. He’s one guy who is building a company based on a perceived reputation. He’s right probably 95% of the time, but a guy like Rick Snow (Eagle Eye sticker) hits the mark for Indian Cents more often than that. If I depended on CAC for all of my purchases, I’d die of old age before I’d finish my sets. I’ve seen a few CAC coins I would not have bought for half the price because they had serious problems.
It probably shouldn’t go. Maybe if you were to crack it out, put it in acetone and MS70, then get it regraded, then it’s POSSIBLE… but as it stands, I say no.
Yeah, this coin did NOT sticker. We all knew that was coming. I dont think ALL the lines are scratches, I really did think most of these were adjustment marks, but in conjunction with other issues, its no wonder that it failed to bean. Like I said, this one was NOT a heartbreaker. I do still really like the semi circ- cam effect this coin has, so the overall look I think it still a decent coin, just not good enough to keep in my Box-of-100 and certainly not premium enough for CAC. Closure!
Honestly I didn’t notice the scratches and verdigris until after I voted yes for a sticker. I still think it has a pleasing look overall. I can see why it is straight graded.
