What can i say about 2009? Well, lets just hope we make it through 2008. Finish off the state quarters, and hopefully purchase many more coins to my collection.

2009 is going to be interesting... (leaving out Proof versions for now)

    Cents.
    P & D, 4 each in current metal
4 in 1909 metal in Uncirc matte? From S mint? P mint? D mint? All?

    Nickel
    P & D

    Dime
    P & D

    Quarters
    6 P and 6 D Territorial

    Half
    P & D

    Dollar
    P & D Sac with Native Rev
    4 P and 4 D presidential coins

Crazy..... toss in Proofs of the above, satin finish of the above for mint sets. The X factor is the cents in the 1909 metal. Which mints will make them and what form will they take, uncirc, satin finish, or proof. Or all. I could see San Fran possibly doing some for circulation coins to take the load off Philadelphia and Denver. Then again that just makes the mint sets BIGGER... gads, Then again, I could realistically see some low Pres dollar mintages this year. The presidents honored in 2009 will be relative unknowns

A good chance it will be but not from me. They already have WAY too much stuff. My mint purchases for 2007 will be ZERO. 2008 is looking the same.

The mint is becoming nothing more than a "government extension" of TV shows like QVC. Too much "crap" and most of it is anymore IMHO. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of good things but they are saturating their own market.

Seems to me they are leaning more towards sucking in "new collectors" by offering the beautiful pieces. Problem is most of these "newbies" coime in thinking they'll get something of real value but not being collectors tend to buy the cheapest stuff. Years down the road they dump it for an overall loss.

Sure, we get "lucky" sometimes but most of the time we don't. Unless you can afford to buy multiples of everything and hope something really hits you may as well be going to a casino. Eventually people may catch on to this but I'm not holding my breath.

You are looking at this the wrong way, Yes the mint is coming out with new intrest in coinage that will bring in new collectors but that is a good thing. Newbies will keep the hobby alive and yes the demand will go up which will drive the prices up but that is what this hobby is all about, everything will balance out in time.

As far as the mint becoming an extension of the TV shows, that is stretching it. The coin shows are one of the biggest rip off in this hobby as far as the prices go. They are take advanage of the less educated by hyping up the value of thier coins, but they are out to make as much as they can as fast as they can. This too will balance out in time.

Don't get caught up in all the hype, coin collecting should be someting you enjoy to do. Some people do it for the investment and other do for the hobby. Decide what you like to do and don't worry about everything else, life is to short.

One thing that I have learned in 35 years of collecting coins is that nothing stays the same.

    Hey Andy,

You have some good points and yeah maybe my "shopping shows" analagy wasn't the best but I've been at this a long time too.

There will be some nice things offered no doubt and for those that buy it more power to them. I like a lot of the gold but not where I'll put my money. I prefer an older type piece but that's me.

The reason I wonder about over saturating and hurting the hobby in the long run is looking at what has happened to the stamp hobby.
I am not a stamp collector and never have been although I've picked up a few on occasion. My local coin dealer also does stamps but he has seen the hobby really die down over the years.
He says the USPS started issuing too many stamps and I'm inclined to agree with him. Used to be a time when a kid could easily obtain all stamps made in a particular year and put them in his/her book.
Then there was a new stamp every week or several and a lot of them lost interest. Guess it wasn't fun anymore.

I would hate to see that happen with coins on any level that's really my point. I too want to see new collectors that enjoy the hobby. I'd like them too KEEP enjoying the hobby.

Me, I made my mind up a long time ago. I like the older stuff and I'm not here to blast the newer stuff so no one take offense please. I just think the mint is going overboard and hope it doesn't backfire.

Clembo, I understand your concerns about saturating the market but even with all the new things that are coming out, I believe there is enoght demand out there to keep the market strong for at least the next couple of years. I don't know what the new presindental dollars will do, but if they do half as what the statehood quarters have done (over $5 billion) you will see a strong market until 2019.

I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but here in Texas and the surrounding states stamps still have a good following, not as strong as they once where but still good. Stamp collecting as in other hobbies will go in cycles, back in the 60's to middle 70's it was stamps, then in the 80's to the early 90's it was the sport cards, and now it is coins on top of the collectable. The USPS started issuing all the series of stamps in the late 80's trying to peak the interest back in stamp collecting but most of the interest had move to sports cards by that time. Stamps are still a good investment as with all collectable but coins has a larger following because of the variety and availability. As I said before everything will balance out in time.

i think these few years. every year the mint exceed the 1995 olympic series and its total 1995 coinage.

    gold & silver bullion

gold & silver bullion will be the hottest coins for 2008 and 2009. because these prices will be up and up.

Lets see if you count all the different designs, compositions, and surface finishes that are POSSIBLE, you get

    32 different cents
    5 different nickels
    6 different dimes
    36 different quarters
    6 different halves
25 different dollars (president and Sac)
110 different total of the circulation designs

    4 different commems (I think)

    3 silver eagles

    3 1/10 oz gold eagles
    3 1/4 oz gold eagles
    3 1/2 oz gold eagles
    3 1 oz gold eagles

Same 12 for the platinum eagles

2 1 oz buffalos (plus possibly 6 more if they do the fractional)

So there could potentially be 143 to 149 different coins in 2009 assuming they don't add anything new. a this doesn't count different holder variations.

Well, I'm one of those people that has quit collecting stamps. I grew up collecting stamps and coins. My emphasis was on stamps well into the 80s and my coins went by the wayside. But as I grew older, got married, had a child and started a career I simply couldn't keep up with the number of stamps that were coming out and I also couldn't afford them. I really just got back into my coin collection a couple of years ago. I still have my stamps but I haven't done much with them in close to 20 years.
I'm ok with what the mint has planned, for now. But, I really think they had better be careful that they don't 'wear' collectors out with all the new issues and special coins that are coming out. I don't collect the commemorative coins, just what is released into circulation and unc. sets.
