Found this coin in a lot I bought. It is a 1956 cent but as the photos show the bow tie is over sized and very unique. I appreciate all the info I gain on this site so any one who responds to this thread will have a chance to win a free Mercury dime. I will post the winner a week from tonight. It will be by random selection by my 3 year old daughter. Thanks for all the info. Ben
Ben- What you have there looks like a penny with a CUD located next to the bow tie. I can't tell but I think the cud is actually seperate from the edge of the tie. CUD's are formed due to the die actually breaking. I am not sure but I believe the correct term is die chip since CUD refers to a die chip on the edge only, but they are commonly refered to as CUD's anyway. What actually happens is a portion of the die breaks off and the resulting recessed area creates an incused, raised, area on any coin struck from that damaged die. You will have to ask some one else about value as I am trying to determine that myself.
Yeah, looks like a cud from a die break to me.... my Red Book places the value as somewhere around $5-$10, depending on what kind of price you could get somebody to pay for it on Ebay!
I agree with it being a chipped die !! But I disagree with the value, closer to a buck or less for this type of Damage . Rick
After checking over 100,000 wheats, it seems about 2% have errors, I've seen lots of die chips and laminations. Am I right in saying that errors are fairly common?
Hi, Certain errors are very common. Some are very scarce. It's tough to generalize with error coins. Minor die chips and die breaks are common. Have Fun, Bill
