1986 cents were made of zinc, so 2.5g is correct. To be honest, it just looks like a dirty coin. Not sure why it would be the size of a nickel. Possibly hammered in between 2 straps of leather to make it bigger.

is it possibly missing its outer layer? worth saving or having attributed for a few bucks?

I highly doubt it is missing the outer layer, sorry. It is just a damaged cent.
    Keep up the hunt!

The coin has been on/in the ground. All of the zinc modern coins wast away, when lost on/in the ground they turn color and melt away. If they are lost at/in the ocean, then the salt makes it worse.
