They symbolize what Native American freedom used to be. When the Indians could roam their land and hunt for their own food to provide for their families. I could go on but I'll let the rest alone.
I'll go with that and yadayada. My stepmother was Sioux so the buffalo was VERY important to her. Being able to actually see a white buffalo was a thrill to her. Coinwise I love the design of the buffalo nickel even though it WAS one of the most horribly designed coins. Indian Cents are nice but no comparison. What the Indian Cent did have was that they wear very well. A G4 is still a decent looking coin.
I really like both sides, it's the perfect coin. Now that I really think about how nice it is, I feel like buying some, hmm. But yeah, I even have a picture of one of the Indians who was modeled for the coin on my wall.
It's very intersting, it labeled as the nickel buffaolo, but he isn't and they have the worng tribe for him. RARE ERROR!!
Besides the fact that there is no buffalo on a buffalo nickel (it is a bison), what is the wrong tribe?
I assume "They" is the poster maker. From all I can find, he used 3 models - Chief John Big Tree, a Seneca. Chief Two Moons, a Cheyenne. Chief Iron Tail, a Sioux. A picture of 1 indian is wrong, but Sioux is at least partially correct
I like both the Indian & the Buffalo. I Just purchased the 2001 Proof & Uncirculated Comm. coins. I should have held back for a while as I also bought the JEFF SPOUSE PF & UNC. Way too much $ on coins at one time for me. But it's done and I'll deal with it. Bruce
The poster is of Cheif John Big Tree, but this is the wrong one. THere were two chief big tree, one claimed the title and was commonly acceptped as one of the models. Then there was the real one who didn't think much of it.
The date should have been incused. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Buffalo nickel. I like the simplistic design of the Liberty Nickel more.
I guess the indian and bison are cool and whatnot. I've never been a big fan though. The silver and gold coins of the same design though, I like. Especially the proof gold ones.
Picky, picky, picky. True but if we want to call that a bufflo, so be it. From Wikipedia Encyclopedia: In American Western culture, the bison is commonly referred to as "buffalo"; however, this is a misnomer. Though both bison and buffalo belong to the same family, Bovidae, the term 'buffalo' properly applies only to the Asian Water Buffalo and African Buffalo. The gaur, a large, thick-coated ox found in Asia, is also known as the Indian Bison, although it is in the genus Bos and thus not a true bison. Then of course there is the Red Book, page 127, 2008 Edition that clearly states BUFFALO and eveyone knows that the Red Book is never wrong. I like the entire coin and will not dispute who or what the Indian on it may or may not be. Don't need my house shot up with arrows. :smile Just kidding of course. That Buffalo must be a real big attraction type since our government continuously repeats it on other coins.
The 2001 silver buffalo coins. And the 2006 and 2007 one ounce 24 karat gold buffalo coins. Have you seriously not heard about th gold buffalos hamman??!!??!??!?
I like the artwork on the buffalos. the portraits of the indian and the bison encompass almost every available space on the coin. There's no cluttering with overstated mottos. In my opinion, it's one of the most artistic coins in modern US numismatics. The downside....they'll drive you completely nuts trying to aquire a collection of nicely minted and well preserved examples. Guy~
I agree. The high-relief design was also a departure from earlier and later nickels. This adds greatly to the appeal to me.
Simply stated, I don't like it. The only reason I have a set of them is because I had already built sets of the Jefferson, shield, and Liberty head nickels. So I put together a set just so I'd have all the nickel five cent pieces.
