Because the "Limited Edition" distinction means there has only been so many of them made. Like the 1947 Leather Bound Tribute Edition that Whitman came out with this year sold for around $59 because there were only 500 of them made and the bonus that Ken Bressett had signed them all. Its a good chance that Mr. Bressett had also signed those as well. I have spent much more than $50 on a single RED BOOK. Thats a very reasonable price in my opinion.

Or possibly an attorney, doctor, or other professional buying a text; or a serious bibliophile; or . . .

The question of whether that book is worth $70 has nothing to do with whether any book is worth that price.

I have paid more than $500 for a single reference book on more than one occasion.

It's more than 25 years since I sold more than 20 volumes from my late father's collection of 17-early 20th Century first editions for at least $1,000 each.

IMHO neither :goofer:, :eek:dd:, :rolling:,, nor any other derogatory terms properly applies to me, or to any of the purchasers of those books because of our expenditures.

People are funny. They will buy anything at any price.

It's the "if you build it, they will come" factor.

If they put out an edition of 1,000 with platinum embossed lettering and foil that cost $250.00 ..it would sell.

If they sent it to NGC and they slabbed it so that you couldn't even touch it ..it would sell.

People will buy anything..and there are people who will buy anything at any price. Thats why sites like ebay are so wonderful.

If you list it ...it will sell.

    skm:
That is the regular (oxymoron coming) special edition for 2007.
The other one is the anniversary, reproduction of the 1947 edition. In two versions, regular red cover and leather.

A collector shouldn't even ask the question posed in this thread. Why spend $70 for a limited edition book? Why spend $200 for $10 worth of silver in a coin? Why spend $20 for a baseball card that originally sold for 1 cent? Collectibles, by definition, sell for more than the common type of the item. EVERYTHING is collectible, and probably collected by someone as long as they have the time, money, and interest and the item has something special about it.

Or maybe the guy just has money to burn and an empty space in his library and wants to appear "cultured."

Yeah sorry OF, I realized after posting this that you were referring to the 1947 Tribute, but the others were referring to the 2007 leather edition.
Plus I was mistaken in the other post about the medal for $10 more, it is $19.95 more.

    Good point Cloud.
