I have been asked alot about my addiction to bison. My first thought is "can't they see it for themselves?" The bison is without a doubt the most underrated and overlooked symbol of America. This fact, along with human ignorance, is a key factor to the near extinction of these magnificent creatures. We, as humans and Americans, owe a huge debt to the bison that may never be repaid.

Bison made their way to North America over the land bridge between Russia and Alaska that used to exist where the Bering Sea is now. Bison changed over time to adapt to where they lived. The one's that stayed in Canada are smaller and referred to as wood bison. The one's we generally know are known as plains bison.
Once covering most of the continent, they were the key to survival for most native Americans, providing food and clothing and covering their homes. When the European's went west, bison fur demand went up higher than the great herds could reproduce. As they were spoiled to their fatty cattle, the meat was left to rot in the fields. From millions, they were decimated until only a few hundred were left.

Look at OUR bison. Over 8' tall at the hump and weighing up to 2000 pounds. Split hooves to allow better footing in all kinds of terrain. Fiercely loyal to the herd. The largest land animal in north America. When it comes to pure muscle, nothing else can even come close.

    More to come....
