Why so many "filled B's" with state quarters ?

    Hello all,
Since I started collecting a short time ago, I have been checking all of my pocket change. In the past couple of weeks I've found 2 or 3 State quarters with the "B" in Liberty filled in. It's fairly obvious even with out any magnification. I haven't seen this in any other coins I've checked. I know they don't carry any premium but I pull them out and save them anyways, mostly as conversation pieces. Was this a quality control issue at the mint?
    Thanks,
    N.E.V.

Think about a die being a reverse image of a coin. If on a coin you have a small recessed area like the inside of a B, that means on the die you would have a little raised "post" in the shape of a D. After so much use those little posts can break off leaving the inside of the B filled in. It's probably not enough of an issue to scrap the die so they keep using them.

That's nothing! You should see the CA SQ's. I had over 500 of them with die breaks. Sometimes there were multiples on one coin. I even have one that looks like the condor dropped a big pile of doodoo on the brim of Muir's hat.
