A 1961 Roosevelt Dime graded MS66. Why is this so cheap? Is it just because of who graded it? Or what? http://cgi.ebay.com/ROOSEVELT-10-1961-ICG-MS-66-/360310602968?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item53e42f7cd8
In contrast to PCGS: http://cgi.ebay.com/1961-PCGS-MS66-...27?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item588a80da9b
The first coin is graded by ICG and has a terrible photo/scan. Every potential buyer of that coin is automatically going to assume that the coin is overgraded and knock at least one point off the grade. Numismedia wholesale for MS66 is $18 and MS65 is $11. The coin sold for $8. Nothing seems out of line with this one. The second coin is graded by PCGS which is a much more reputable grading company. However, the coin is not sold and that is simply a sale price. I very much doubt it will sell for that much. IMO, the coin should be priced around $20 and is currently overpriced.
Much More reputable? From what I have seen ICG seems in line with their grades, sometimes better than NGC and PCGS. Are you saying ICG is a lower tier (over)grader, or is it that they don't have "registry sets"?
I am saying they are a lower tier TPG than PCGS (and NGC). It has nothing to do with registry sets and everything to do with the consistency of their grading. You are welcome to your own opinion of course, but it would be a minority opinion in the numismatic world.
Yeah, and they'd probably be making a mistake by doing so. That's an older ICG slab and with pretty much all coins pre-'64 ICG's grading is usually in line with NGC and PCGS. It's only the MS70 stuff with the moderns that you have to worry about in these older ICG slabs.
OK, I am in the minoroty a lot it seems. I just thought ICG was frequently lumped in with PCGS and NGC in accepted slabs. I would not have a problem with purchasing one, (except as Doug pointed out modern stuff, which is another area I would be in the minority).
Just goes to show ya how important reputation is in the TPG game. Honestly though, I have been buying slabbed coins since the 90's and PCGS & NGC were always considered the top two.
