Why do you roll search?

I started out roll searching b/c I wanted the silver. I quickly found it to be fun and a Therapeutic way to end my day. I now keep a box of pennies around so I have something to sort while watching tv in the evening just in case I run out of silver to look for. I'm now developing a numismatic interest and starting books with my circulation finds. I'm thinking of starting a jefferson proof set now as well, though I don't know how I feel about buying coins.

I plan on keeping all the silver I find as an investment other than occasionally flipping 40% coins to 90%coins.

I roll search because it is a recreational activity for me and is something i enjoy doing.
Where do i put them? I have a couple of trays at my desk along with a small safe.

Thanks for starting the thread model77. I am interested to see other people's responses.

I've roll searched before joining the forums. But my main motivation has been the fellow roll searchers here like Merc Crazy. They have been finding some really nice and unique coins and it gives me more motivation to want to find some equally stunning finds. And I generally keep what I find, nothing too out of the ordinary there.

I roll search for the same reason as you. It is relaxing and fun. I find a little silver (about 15 oz in the last year). Not enough to make the whole endeavor profitable, but still fun. The best way to end the day in the summer is to sit out on the patio with a box of coins to go through!

My favorite coins to search are the nickels. They offer the most variety I think. I have found a '50-D, '39-D, '16 Buffalo, an 1899 V-Nickel about 110 war nickels and some interesting foreign coins.

There is something about finding a (sometimes valuable) piece of history in pocket change that is tremendously appealing to me.

I have thought about selling some of my finds, but I can't quite force myself to do it.

It's relaxing and fun. I enjoy the finds. Sort of like playing the slot machines (repetition - over and over) with some jackpots but without losing your money trying to win.

I do it to try to find error coins. I've been searching only pennies, but as soon as I get some extra money I'll be ordering a box of halves to look for silver.

Because my mom says drugs are bad.
Because I see something to do when I am bored and could be doing work.
Because My chiropractor (Grandpa) likes seeing me after two boxes of cents.

Because I have the chance of finding free silver.
Because I am working on a circulation find Jefferson nickel set.
Because I still haven't found that 1950-D Jeff
    Because I like wheaties
Because hoarding copper is something to invest in in case "They" make it legal to melt.
Because if they don't make it legal, I still have face value.
Because I could use the exercise.
Because I gotta pay for some stuff by myself.
    Because I am addicted.
    Because. Just because.

I started with halves, just to find silver. Then everybody started searching halves. Now I search nickel and cent boxes. I keep all nickels after I look through them. Nickels are a good hedge against deflation (because they are "Cash") and inflation because of their metal value. As to cents, I look for wheaties, and save all of the copper ones for the same reason that I save all nickels. Plus, it is relaxing and fun. I just found a really heavily clashed 1983 Jefferson in AU. Pretty cool. I have a roll of war nickels and a half roll of mostly dateless buffaloes. I found an XF 1910 Wheatie last month. Little treasures like this make sorting much more enjoyable.

I like having something to do that could be rewarding and relaxing at the same time. Like I tell everyone that asks me why I do this, I can not lose money... unless I literally lose it.

I just started, but my reasons are for the fact of finding Errors, and anything old (1959 and older). To me, I love the suspense, and thrill of not knowing what you may uncover!

I search halves to fund my lincoln collection. I have found an entire set of halves just from circulation. I like to buy lincolns that i know i wont have a good change of finding in circulation so the extra silver pays for that.

my motives are quite plain, i do it for the cash reward on the price of silver. If I find a unique sought after coin then that's a bonus. I do love the hunt. I guess I got the sickness, lol

I started doing it for the silver. Then the numismatist in me started to grow and has now took over. That much is evident. I still LOVE finding silver, though for me it is getting rarer and rarer.

It's nice to see that others of you evolved like I am. I started out just wanting to find the silver halves to hoard because the idea of something face value 50 cents being worth $5 or $15 in silver intrigued me. Now I search boxes and want to trade stuff I have multiple of for stuff I don't have so I can fill the 6 folders I have started...so it was originially for the silver. Now I am still mainly just collecting the silver coins, but I feel like for a different reason than I originally was. Originally I was just piling up whatever I found in my drawer, now I am putting them in folders. I just love finding a good deal, and face value for a silver, or rare coin, is a GREAT deal to me! I think if I was alive during the gold rush I probably would have gone to California because I think I have a strange fascination with precious metals...

I began roll searching to hoard silver. Silver was already priced too high for me to feel comfortable spending thousands of dollars, so I figured if I could get it for cheaper it was worth the effort. I began about a year ago and until recently I have been pleased with my results; time well spent. Realistically, where else can you pick up silver for its face value! It's a legal way to rob the bank!

I keep a reasonable amount of 40% halves, I keep all the 90% halves I find and parlay the remainder of 40%ers into ASEs, Morgans, Peace, Canadian Maples, Sunshine Minted rounds or Gold or Platinum (normally in 1/10 ounce coins).

Having a safe deposit box opened at a dump bank is nice because you can deposit your silvers and your sorted coins at the same time too.

I don't know why. It's just cheap and addicting. And then my keepers go in my bedroom.
