Why do some dimes have slightly more depth around rim??

It seems like this 1980-D dime has more depth than most dimes I come across. What causes this? Is it an error?

    I'm so clueless...

    A better strike maybe?

Closely compare the relief of the 1980 to the 1996; notice how the over all design on the former shows significantly more "depth" than the latter? This isn't the case only with dimes, but is pretty much across the board with US coins in that more modern issues display a much lower/flatter relief than their counterparts of the past.

That said, I could only assume this is what you're referring to. If incorrect, perhaps you could clarify?

It depends on the strength of the strike and how the edge of the planchet was upset.

Yes, exactly what I was referring to. Thank you for educating me, I still have so much to learn.
