Countless times this topic comes up. Maybe it's the rubber necking at a car accident. Watching ACTV Fine Coins with Barry Chappell and some side kick. Could get a brand new ASE 2015 straight from the box for.......$28.95. But wait the volume purchase is much better..... $23.95 I don't know if the price or the way they removed them from the tubes with no gloves.
Those shows are too much fun to watch. My favorite is Mike Mezack. It's amazing how he can talk about the same product for 15 minutes.
Shoot. I remember back when I was kid going to SCCC and wanted to be a DJ on the campus radio station. Passed all the requirements except for the 'ad lib'. Totally froze.....cat got your tongue. That Mezack guy is amazing with the gift of gab.
I record and I watch when I can. Never to buy but I'm such a noob that I watch/ff through those shows to learn.
It can even be better when it's live in person! I was at a live auction this weekend and saw someone pay $32.50 for a clad "Obama" coin with COA (in a bidding war no less!). And he was happy about it! I picked up a 6 1964 Silver Kennedy halves for $30, and he got one clad Obama commemorative - and paid more!
Yikes! Aren't those just an Obama sticker stuck on a half dollar? I'd say you did better getting the silver halves under melt.
I do love me my fair share of the coin shows. Coin Vault, Art & Coin, HSN with Mike M., Rick Tomaska's, Don Davis on AVC. I don't record them, but when watching other shows, I'll flip over to see what they're hawking. I have learned about coins I was unfamiliar with, but if I want it, I'll go to my usual sources to pick one up.
$32.50 plus 12% auction fees! http://www.ebay.com/itm/BARACK-OBAM...608?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d481db40 Low Information Buyer.... I'm sure voted the same way!
I imagine you could get people to watch someone else play solitaire on TV if you had the right announcer. gift of gab? for sure. Buyer beware.
Sometimes I'll have the Coin Vault live stream playing in the background when I'm getting cleaned up for the day. It's always fun to see how high their prices are. One time though, they had bulk war nickels at $1 apiece, which I was surprised by. I wish Mike Mezack had a live stream.
I love it when the host goes "down the rabbit hole" with a little white lie and then tries to dig themselves out of it. It must be incredibly hard to stand in front of a camera and think of interesting things to say about cull silver coins or worn buffs, without a little embellishment. Watching Jack McNamara on Rick's show can be quite painful. I believe he is a very knowledgeable numismatist (much more than me), but he has a lot of work to do as a presenter. So do Rick's daughters for that matter.
I had to stop watching him... I kept having these uncontrollable urges to find some way to warn the viewers they were being taken if they bought his coins at those astronomically over-the-top prices. Since there was no way to do that (the HSN website won't even let you post about something unless you buy it) the frustration was maddening. How that shyster can sleep at night befuddles me. The only positive is I was able to use this as an example of how these home shopping channels NEVER actually have a good deal, everything is clearly WAY overpriced. My wife no longer buys anything from any of them.
And for the record, when I happen across these programs, I peek in only to see what they are asking for their stuff and where their price actually falls in the world of reality. In other words, wondering who's getting screwed next and for how much. I understand that these folks have to make a living but then, you could say the same thing about burglars as it's not so much "what they do" as much as it is "how they do it". The innuendos such as "Rare", "Limited", "Perfect", and "Beautiful" fly around as freely as farts at summer camp!
I hate to give my auction secrets away and get burned again! The last time I did I ended up getting outbid on a large collection of Morgans by a guy I had mentioned it to not a month earlier. They are actually listed in the yellow pages. They are pretty inconsistent with what they have, but occasionally you can score. One has rare auctions in downtown, the other I went to was the GSA auction in Sacramento.
Barry Chappell is on "Art and Coin TV" right now selling 2015 ASE's at 28.95 plus S&H. 20 or more - $24.95 per - plus S&H. $23.95ea for a box of 500. Key statements "plus shipping and handling" "Silver has gone up 3 bucks in the last week" (what market is this?) We should start a mailing campaign... Sheesh!
