A member said this in another post, and got me to thinking. Are you here to get a free coin or just to talk about coins? I am here because I like talking about coins and helping people out with their questions. Any thoughts? Cameron Kiefer
Look, it's not a 5. If that was said by a PCGS person then it is a poor reflection on the company. The main reason that PCGS coins trade better than the nearest competitor, is that PCGS has always been honorable about fixing their mistakes, whereas the other coin graders deny making mistakes. PCGS takes the high moral ground. Or did. Every competition can be gimmicked. And the people who do it think they are clever and they get away with something and they "win." The dealer on the bourse floors who takes every advantage never caring whether he sees you again as long as he gets your money now and it is your fault if you cannot tell a doctored coin, that person gets ahead and gets money and "wins." And yet, in the final analysis, that person is not healthy-looking. You can read their body and know it. The meanness of spirit eats through the flesh until nothing is fun any more because everything hurts too much. Myself, as a long time admirer of the works of Ayn Rand, I must confess shamefullly that as a collector, I have not cleared much profit from the buying and selling. I have, however, proudly made money as a writer. Like Burt in Mary Poppins, "I does what I likes and I likes what I do." If I could not enjoy the process, the money would be poor consolation. For me, numismatics (as much of life) is very much a matter of letting other people enjoy themselves -- though not at my expense. For instance, I expect to be able to write about this Website and the discussions and other features. As I do not write "exposes" the comments from and about PCGS are already forgotten.
I am the one that said that. I'm from the PCGS coin fourm i don't work for PCGS and anything i say or do has nothing to do with how PCGS runs their business. It got me to look at this site and when i saw it's mix of US and World coins i signed up because it would be nice to learn about world coins. If it isn't true i don't care i still enjoy this site for what it is a good place to come and learn about coins.
Most people from rcc could tell you that I am capable of whipping out a hundred posts in a very short amount of time. So, if I wanted the coin, it would already be in the mail. I am here because I like coins, like to read about them and like to talk about them and like to help people when I can. Like many people, I have my own little box that I collect in. I collect mostly cheap, circulated, raw coins but I do it with a passion. I enjoy interacting with other collectors and being exposed to things outside my own little collecting box. It is fun and I learn a lot from it.
I put that in my sig file at the PCGS forum. I've got five silver eagles right here on my desk waiting for anyone who wants to take me up on that offer. It's not the only incentive that I've offered people to come have a try at my site. The idea is to get people interested. I know that this forum is better in many ways that the competition, but I need to get that message out, somehow. I do appreciate everyone coming in and participating! I set up this site for all of you to use and enjoy, on me.
Thanks for the site Peter T Davis i like this one a little more than PCGS because it mixes US and World together at PCGS you only learn about one or the other without having to sort throuh all the other ones. I hope you get more people here this could be a great place to talk about coins if you got 400-500 members
We've been running contests and giving away freebies in "Error World" for over two years now.I think it gives a little added interest to the whole group.I also think the Silver Eagles thing is a very generous bonus, thank you Peter. You have obviously done alot of work bringing us this forum. It's easy to use, fast, and fun.and I think that in time it'll be a big hit! I'll be emailing you again soon, keep up the good work. ~Jim
Why am I here - I have asked myself that question before.... I thought I would stop by the check it out after seeing the lure on PCGS. I came here because I am trying to expand my knowledge base so that I can be better at collecting coins - for myself and family. I have been collecting mostly circulated coins for a few years, and also when I was younger - started with the Whitman folders as a child. I like to help when I can, but know more about eBay than coins.... but I am studying and learning as time allows. Oh, and a silver eagle would make a nice gift for someone on my Christmas list, altho I probably won't win one because I am not that knowledgeable "yet". 8)
Neptune you came to the right place there is only one way to learn and that is, to find out where the smart people are and listen to them.
I don't know why I'm here. Wait, where am I? Who are you? Who am I!?! 8O Oh, yeah, sorry. That happens to me every once in a while! I came here from RCC, and I like it here so far. Hopefully we'll get some more participants. This is my first time on this kind of message board, and it has some advantages over usenet, to be sure. But there are things I like about usenet, too! So I'll be on both I guess...
mbbiker, for me, usenet is easier to read quickly. I dowload all of the messages and then read them offline. More like reading email than using a web browser. The threading of the messages is a litle easier too and you can filter stuff you don't want to read, etc. Forums like this are nice too and I will be using both too. (Hey you only have 10 more posts to go! )
I hope you learn alot as well as teach us a few things (like where to find a nice 42-41 merc for not much money)
Microcosmos Peter T. Davis and Chrysta mentioned this forum on RCC and I came over to check it out and I liked the presentation. The problem with PCGS is that it is way too big. I do not see a necessary correlation between population and quality. It is true that you can get into some jerky backwater places, but mostly, on the internet, one place is pretty much like the next, as far as the people go. Peter created a nice website. It has good features. He put a lot of thought and effort into this. It shows. I do not participate in the AOL coin forums, even though I am an AOL subscriber. I post occasionally, but really, I have not much to say to people who want to know the value of any old coin and who do not want to read a book to find out... and who lose interest in the coin as soon as it is not going to put their kids through college. So far, the visitors here are a good cross section of interested and interesting collectors. It is a nice coffeehouse. (Can I get a scone?)
I came here via the RCC looking for a place to call home in reference to coin collecting, unlike the RCC with its millions of topics. Just jump in and do, say, create whatever you like, this is organized for coin collecter's and dealers who want to talk about coins. Thank you. Jess
I like the show and tell pictures of coins. I love looking at others peoples coins. I like talking about coins. seeing what is someone's favorite coin and why. helping others identify coins if I can is fun also. being told of a coin or coins that I did not existed that might be on my want list. sharing coins with other coin collectors. I love this hobby.
If the powers that be wish, they could lock threads after a certain period of time and save those of us who do not live for the board functions from replying to ten year old threads.
