why are the letters extra thick on this coin?

    if im correct that could be a strong strike or something along the lines of that name. im not sure though. @paddyman98

    It was struck with tired and worn dies.

    @Chaga , this is my opinion. Others may agree or disagree.

    If you look closely at the strike from a newer die, you will notice that the letters are tapered from the top (narrowest) to the base (widest). As the die deteriorates from use, the recessed lettering on the die begins to wear down so that the letters become wider.
