Why are albums chezzy looking?

It may just be me, and it probably is, but I believe that Dnasco and Whitman albums are for the most part crappy looking.

Why would a collector want to display his prized colplete collection in a compressed paper coin book which in most cases looks like it was made in the sixties.

How come someone hasen't come out with something better. I'd like to see airtite come out with a book trimmed with black velvet which has openings for the airtites to be pressed into. This would keep the coins from being marred up and would provide a better display. IMO as always.

I have been considering how I would make the pages and I was wondering if anyone had a sugestion or knew of a better book.

As far as my idea I was thinking of taking 1/4" masonite and using mortising bits or hole cutters to drill out holes which are about 1/4" larger than the diameter of the associated airtite. I would then pad the page with thin dense foam, probably 1/8" thick, on both sides. I would then wrap the pages in velvet or felt and cut out the holes.

I was thinking that a plastic ring which was slightly larger than the airtite could be mounted into the hole much the same way an airtite is closed. I would then have the ring include a rubber O-ring around each side. The O-ring would be there to allow for insertion and retention of the airtite. I would then cap the page in a boarder of oak or maple. In fact this could be a customization option in which people could order the type of border they wanted.

Anyway the pages could be drilled with a series of holes for collecting dimes pennies nickles and quarters. The same can be said for halfs and dollars. I would be easy at this point to then mix and match according to likes or required spaces needed for common sets.

I even invision placing two drilled holes below the main opening which would allow the placement of a brass label plate which could have the year and mint mark as well the mintages. Mabey have the year on one side and the mintage on the other. For year sets the label would also include the denomination and mabey the compisition.

I realize these pages would not be the size of a standard book. I do think they could be smaller than a newspaper page.

Anyway this is my idea. Anyone have suggestions?

I would think Airtite would love a book of this sort. N E thing to increase sales.

Not to disenfranchise your opinion, but I wouldn't store my coins in other than Danscos. I think the slabs are just crappy looking and are hard to display, and the air-tites are just as bad. Sure they may provide for better protection, but I'd much rather my coins were nicely displayed in Dansco Albums than in slab cases any day!

I have a really old red dansco album for wheat pennies, that goes up to 1929. The price listed next to the svdb (handwritten) says 40.00 dollars. I wish I could get one for that price.

Okay, I'm back ! What I was saying is, shatsi is correct, there are many devices already available to display Air-Tites, including albums, storage boxes, display cases, and more.

Yeh I've looked and looked at those but I can't bring myself to buy some. The cards are not what I am looking for and the pages are small. Also I can not accept this line at all.

"The display cards are 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" and produced from chipboard laminated with velour on one side and black embossed scuff resistant paper on the other."

I do not find paper attractive unless a centerfold is printed on it, or it's a millon dollar loto ticket. And the fake leather look really drives me bonkers. I mean why put the coin in an airtite which allows you to look at both sides and not dress both sides of the album equaly. I don't know mabey I'll have to make a prototype and sell the concept to Airtite.

BTW I think their website is horible also. Course that didn't stop me from buying $450.00 in supplies from them.

    How about these guys ?

They have some nice cases with trays that will take coins in Air-Tites. The downside is that you would have to pick up the coin and turn it over to see the reverse.

I've never been a fan of albums, just don't care for them. But that's a matter of personal taste and everybody's different. But if you are going to use an album for coin storage you need to make sure of a few things first. Primarily - what materials are used to make the album ? Fabrics, glue, wood & wood products, paper, plastics - they can all degrade over time and put off fumes, oils & residues that are harmful to your coins.

That's why many of the albums made today are made the way they are. Today's Danco albums are made with archival materials to prevent those problems. Several other brand names are also.

You may wish to consider that before trying to build a better mousetrap. But by all means do try - that's progress ;)

To be honest I'm not sure - but it's easy enough to drop an email and ask ;)

I guess I'm looking a little beyod an album. I actually want more of a display. I had a thought today if you madew the case/page as I described above and fitted it to a binder like easle you could embed LEDs near the ring in the page. This would allow you to light up each Airtite with just a flick of a switch.

I'm really working overtime on this idea. I might just have to shoot airtite an email.

Well it sounds like a neat idea - just consider what I have said about the materials used. I'd hate to see you go through all that work and end up messin up your coins.

BTW - if you use lights, don't forget about the heat factor ;)

thanks speedy. well, i talked to air-tite and this is what they responded with: (any comments would be appreciated, i think i was scared away)

    Hello Aaron,

Sorry I misread your first email. The album is made of vinyl and the pages are made of velour covered pressed chip board. The vinyl does contain PVC but since your coins are inside of the Air-Tite it should have no affect on your coins. I have coins that have been in the Air-Tite albums for years and they look the same as they did the day I put them in it. Hope this helps you make your decision.

    Thanks,
    Marty

A minor issue Sky - Marty is not the manufacturer of Air-Tite holders, he's just another retailer who sells them. Don't get me wrong though - I'm not knockin the guy.

But since Air-Tites are not really airtight - I'd be hesitant to store them or any other holder in an album that contains PVC. Just not worth the risk to me.

i agree, i guess i have to look for another solution. i am only looking for something to store some silver eagles in. i have them in air-tites right now. the thought of an album sounded great, but maybe i will go the display card/storage box option. any thoughts would be appreciated.

    thanks once again

I am not certain but I believe Intercept Shield makes albums that are acid and sulfur free, and protects the coins from corrosion. I have never seen these albums myself so I can not tell you much.
