Ok I understand that a MS70 is going to demand a premium regardless, but really MS69. With the modern equipment and quality of these coins, MS69 is really a normal struck coin in the Silver Eagle series. For the past dozen years there are more MS70's than all other grades below MS69 combined. Using NGC population for 2016 issues there are more MS70 than all other grades combined. You should be able to walk into a LCS and pick up raw 69's rather easily for around $3 to $4 over melt yet on eBay I see some going for considerable more. I'd like y'all's opinion on this.
I agree. MS69 is pretty much the standard for ASE's. Nice to have an MS70 but the premium is not worth submitting oneself. Cheaper to pick up after market/slabbing. I would think, although I don't have a local LCS near me, that most dealers in this series do not pay for the slabs, just the coin and you should be able to pick one at your suggested price point. I picked up a run of (12) PF69 Jefferson's for around $5.00 each in PCGS slabs from Great Collections so it worked for me. Not MS but this worked for me.
Raw 69's? Just confused with your terminology. Do you mean that you can buy raw ASE's that would grade at that level? If so, I tend to agree. That's why I never buy ASE's graded. Why do so, when you save a bunch of money buying them raw. As to why they cost more on EBAY........well, sometimes ya just can't fix stupid.
Some people want them graded for their registries or they like the label presentations. The modern dates you are right basically all of them are a 69 or better. But the LCS market and eBay market are very different in general. The LCS the expense is on you to take the time to drive there ect. eBay comes with fees for selling there and then the cost to ship the item which is almost always set at free shipping now so sellers have to build those costs into their prices.
Buy an ASE, say, for 20 bucks. Pay $30 to get it graded. You need a $50 silver price to get your money back. The math on grading ASEs just doesn't work.
Off Topic I wonder how much someone would be willing to pay for a 2004 "Dodge" SAE. I received this coin as a promotion from a local Dodge dealer in 2004. It is raw and seated in a satin-lined presentation case. I haven't looked at it for several years, but it was toning nicely the last time I looked. Chris
It just happened that it was in a box on a shelf not more than 10' away.......................and I got a fudgesicle from the freezer while I was up. Chris
My son's friend bought a whole PCGS box of 2016 ASE graded MS70 for $599.00. I think he bought them in May off Ebay. 20 per box. I like the new bold underline look. Can you go a step further and put it in red?
Graded ASEs are a cottage industry founded on the belief that people will not do some basic math before buying. TV coin con men and eBay sellers are the main beneficiaries.
Who's buying an ASE? They're buying a slab with a really big number on it that just so happens to have an ASE inside.
I got a couple of those 2004 Premier night Chrysler ASE coins. The dealer was giving them out with the introduction of the RWD Chrysler 300C Hemi. They sell on the aftermarket for about $25 with box and papers.
