I am starting a new contest called WHO'S ON FIRST? and it will have several questions you have to answer, as well as one more component: you have to take the FIRST letter of each of your answers (minus the word "the", "a", or "an", and the like) and tell me what that spells a numismatically related word or placename (example: like if the first letters of the answers were ETNC you could make it right by saying "CENT"). Some answers to the questions may have two or more answers that could be given, but if you give the wrong version of the answer, you will not be able to do the last portion. For example, if the answer was Memorial Cent, so that M could be used in the mixed up letter puzzle, then if you give Lincoln Memorial Cent as the answer (technically it could be a version), you would have to use L in that puzzle, and if there isn't an L in it, you'll not make it all the way through. Or if the answer you give is President Lincoln or President Abe Lincoln (to get a P to use), but the version that will work in the puzzle is Abe (or Abraham) Lincoln for a letter A, then you will be stuck. I will try to limit these versions, but can't guarantee someone won't come up with something. I want everyone to join in, but make your answers count.....I would like no more than two guesses IN TOTAL for each person. The prize will be a mystery, because if I have to send to the US or Canada it will be one thing, and if I have to send to another country, it may have to be something else so it can be shipped (if I find that the prize I want to give is not shipable to another country). Contest will end one week from now, to give all who want to play time to do so.....and yes you can look up answers - I actually expect you may have to. But beware your sources! This is a learning contest too, so put your answers to the questions here if you dare, but PM the puzzle answer, so that you don't give that away to others (and if you want to put your answers in the PM, that's ok too).... Any ties (meaning all correct answers on both parts) will have a winner drawn randomly. So...... let the games begin: here's the questions: 1) First animal on a coin 2) First coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust" 3) First illustrated numismatic book 4) First coin used in the modern decimal system 5) First coin that lead to the creation of the "Waffler" 6) First blind person to be on US Coin (And don't forget to work out the puzzle ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___) (and hopefully I haven't in some way messed up on this in formulating it)
Thanks for the contest Kasia. I'll be working on it, but not tonight. I'm interested in learning all the answers!
Oh wow Kasia, this is going to be a fun one (too bad we can't see some of the off-the-wall-guesses but maybe you can post the funniest ones after it's over?). You definitely put a lot of time and thought into this one!! I spent the last two days stranded at the top of my grandma's cell phone tower (lost the paper my measurements were written on at the end of day one, but that's not a story for a family forum) trying to get my answer for the other contest ready but I hope to have my answers to you in the next couple days. THANK YOU for the contest!!
Try it --- there's only 6 questions to find the answers to 1) First animal on a coin 2) First coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust" 3) First illustrated numismatic book 4) First coin used in the modern decimal system 5) First coin that lead to the creation of the "Waffler" 6) First blind person to be on US Coin and an word to find ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ probably not all that difficult!
Wow! I cannot believe it. Either this is the worst cointalk contest ever, or people are really being put off by the questions as being too hard or something. A lot of you have looked at this but to date, I have only ONE entry, and that is one guessing the mixed up word. Please, if you are not entering, let me know why this is not working for you, 'cause I want the contests I put up to fun as well as challenging! Thanks, Kasia
well, i've been working on this since it was put up, and i think i have the letters but there are like 90 different words for them!
Are U sure of the answers? Obviously I didn't work this out from the standpoint you are doing, but I tried to pick at least a couple that I thought couldn't be answered any other way than one way, no matter what, and then limit the possibilities of answers on the others..... By the way 1) on Blind person it means "Blind" as in Can Not See (with eyes) at all, not Blind as in visually impaired (very poor eyesight, but has some remaining vision). Of all the actual people on the US coins, I can only think of one that this applies to. Which gives either using the person's first and last name as an answer or using the person's last name as an answer. So that leaves two letters that could apply in one space. 2) on two of the questions, the answer can either probably be the actual one word answer or a two word answer. But either way, it should come up with one letter each to apply. 3) on one of the questions, there's a great deal of flexibility (leading I think to three possible versions of an answer, and three different letters that could be used) but ultimately if you have the other answers then you will find that really only one version will give a coin or other numismatically related word. I could be wrong, but I can't think of another word that would work out for it. 4) on one of the questions, if you keep it very simple, you should have no problem. 5) on one of the questions, I would have anticipated it would be like really easy and a give away as to what letter to use, but ???? if you get really crazy about it, I guess it could fit in with the one I mentioned in note 3) here and have some flexibility, but ultimately really only have one letter that would be correct in the final word. Kasia
Unfortunately, no one gave anything near the correct answers, so I can't give a prize on this. Here's the answers: 1) First animal on a coin Lydian Lion 2) First coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust" Two-Cent Piece 3) First illustrated numismatic book Andrea Fulvio's Illustrium Imagines 4) First coin used in the modern decimal system Russian Ruble 5) First coin that lead to the creation of the "Waffler" Euro 6) First blind person to be on US Coin Helen Keller (And don't forget to work out the puzzle T H A L E R )
I'm sorry that I didn't take a stab at it but I wasn't sure if the #1 question was specific to US coins or meant all coins. Thank you for the challenge, and I would love another shot at a similar contest of the same format! I know you don't want the answers to be too obvious, but maybe if the questions were more specific, with fewer words in the answers to lead folks astray. You were on to something here and I enjoy a good brainteaser, so please don't give up on this!
