Last October a routine audit indicated that 17,514 ounces of gold (and a lesser amount of silver) was unaccounted for at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa. For the past 9 months the RCM has tried to determine if they made an accounting mistake or if they have indeed lost $15 million in gold or been the victim of a major theft. Major heist at Canadian mint suspected After a 9-month review accounting, bookkeeping and internal errors have been ruled out. Speculation is now focused on theft and how 17,500 of gold could have been stolen from a high-security facility like the RCM. Thieves might have smuggled mint gold in acid OK, so math is not the reporter's strongest subject. (17,514 ounces of gold is not equivilant to 44,000-ounce gold bars (whatever that is)). But the questions remain - Did the 17,514 ounces of gold exist and, if so, how did it disappear? If the gold was stolen how was it stolen?
