Sorry, cant share this information with you. Unfortunately, I spent an hour typing this entire article only to be edited and deleted in the most part. So, in turn, I just deleted the entire original post. But whats left of it can still be seen below. Thanks for allowing me to share info with members who dont have the opportunity to recieve the magazine, and then deleting it. Unfortunately you are not allowed to do that. It is both against the law and against forum rules to post copyrighted material like this. Please stop doing so !
What do you mean "stop doing so", you act like I break copyright laws every week. There is information posted in here all the time thats quoted from web sites and various books. All I was doing was passing along information for others to learn from, thats the purpose of this forum...right? From now on then I guess the members here will have to get thier own copy of Coin World and read it for themselves because I will no longer share info from any numismatic publication, whatsoever. Government laws and legislation is public information anyway isnt it. So much for sharing.
Indianhead, It isn't that we don't want this type of info copied here, but CoinWorld is VERY strict in their copyrights and we have been told that such things have to be removed or CoinTalk could get in a law suit. Some places aren't as strict as CW.... As long as it is short quotes, and well within the Fair Use law, then it can be posted...when it gets to be more than that we must edit it. Speedy
I went to CoinWorld's website---those of you who have an online membership can read the article here: http://coinworld.com/news/cwhl.asp?uID=&hlID=1 Speedy
No you personally don't do it every week. But somebody does, just about every other day. The message wa snot just directed at you but at everyone. Yes there is. And every single time that it exceeds the fair use practice it is either edited or deleted. Yes that is indeed the purpose of the is forum. But it is not the purpose of this forum to help others learn by breaking the law or violating the copyright regulations. If you wish to share information then do so legally by posting a link to the information. I realize that copy/pasting an article may not seem like a big deal to many of you, but if you were the author of that article or the copyright holder you would undoubtably feel that is was a big deal for others to use your work without permission. No matter how you look at it - it is stealing plain and simple. Which one of you here is going to tell me that stealing is OK ?
Indianhead! I am sorry, but I have to back the moderators here. While I appreciate you attempt to share the article it does become a problem for the board itself. I would rather have the board than the article - of course I will eventually read it when I get my fathers copy of coin world. We can always discuss what the article is about, or, like speedy post a link to an article. It might actually increase coinworld readship - I actually like the magazine. If my father ever gives up his subscription I will take it over.
Would someone define "fair use" -- as my interpretation leads me to believe that it wasn't broken, provided the author and source were provided....Mike
Here ya go - Fair Use In simple terms, it means that one may copy a few lines or a paragraph of copyrighted material and post it. But that's all.
I would think it would be otay to do that with public information, as long as proper credit is given, but on "pay" articles, such as the one in the OP, I would think even that would violate the laws. The news organizations, like the AP, are perfect examples. If you use any part of their stuff, you gotta pay. I wish the laws would be simplified and provide that as long as you are not doing it for profit, you can quote any public information without getting permission, but proper credit must be given. Articles, like the one in the OP, should be classified private information and would require permission to copy. Ribbit
